This made me realize it may be possible to create a small army of demigod adventurers with fantastic fighting skills and soul attributes, retire them immediately, and then make a fort and wait for my uberdwarves to show up and join the military.

That was one of the first suggestions the moment it appeared on the dev logs.

but is it possible to retire a goblin, and have him show up as a snatcher at a dwarf fort?

i know historical figures can lead sieges, but how does the thief job work?

My guess is that it wouldn't consider your character a snatcher, just an adventurer-that-retired-there. If asked your profession by a later adventurer you'd say "I wander the wilds," not "I rescue lost children".

What you could try, though, is to find a goblin site with a goblin thief in residence and then beat the living sick out of him with a training sword, continually throw him with wrestling, let him just attack you for a while, maybe throw him in a murky pool for swimming practice, etc. Powerlevel beforehand then keep at it until he gets good enough that he kills you, and there's your commando snatcher.

No idea if the snatchers that show up in fort mode are drawn from historical populations, though.

I'd really like to see the carnage resulting from a legendary knife user/dodger/wrestler/etc. suddenly getting spotted halfway into a fort.
