Well another downside for something going mainstream is your voice easily gets drowned out.

When something is small your voice can get across because it is like a room of 10 people. When it is mainstream it is like yelling in the middle of a concert.

Yeah, I hate it when some hipster thing that I like(d) becomes mainstream, and legions of idiotic prickdick retardo-sauce chugging douchberries influence it.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

This thread reminds me of my reaction to the Watchmen movie. Or when the walking dead got a series.

I dont like when it goes mainstream and changes.
For example: Metallica
It had great stuff up to and including Master of Puppets. But became shit after.
Slayer is pretty well known but still makes true thrash metal. And lets hope it wont change.

I've realised that I'm horribly elitist. I hate hearing console gamers talk about call of duty and Skryim and other mainstream AAA games, but I'd actually hate it if they all migrated to the PC and discovered PC gaming.

Some series also when they get popular they try to appeal to the "Mainstream" (Since that is the major source of income) which usually ammounts to SERIOUSLY watering down their product or simply stop innovating and release the product again and again with only minor or shallow additions.

Mainstream has often hurt series more then helped them.

OP, you're either a hipster and/or an elitist swine.  Sorry you had to find out like this.
Huh.  Okay then, moving on... (definitely not elitist though scratch that, if you play dwarf fortress you may as well be elitist :P, maybe hipster, on a small scale)

*snip*
Well... on a technicality... if you are of the opinion that bringing more people into the awesome that is Dwarf Fortress... or MLP... is a good thing... it takes a few points off of the hipster scale.

@Last few posts...
On another note... by Jah, deep down, we all have a dirty little hipster inside us.  We don't want Dwarf Fortress to ever get watered down for "mainstream" consumption.

To be fair, there is a difference between liking something because it is obscure, and not wanting something obscure that you like to go to shit mainstream.

Things usually get worse when they go mainstream. Like i previously said Metallica. And fair amount of other things.

There have been a few exceptions but yeah rule of thumb is that everything gets worse when it comes into contact with the mainstream.
