And I assume make deserts a biome elves tend to inhabit.

Add moar deserts and moar savagery to the world.

Or you could just embark on a savage desert.

Alternatively mod all cats into Scorpions. I can't see how that could possibly go wrong.

Will elves settle in the desert?  If they don't, then they won't bring desert critters at all.  Adding a line like [BIOME_SUPPORT:DESERT:3] would enable them to settle on deserts.

Will elves settle in the desert?  If they don't, then they won't bring desert critters at all.  Adding a line like [BIOME_SUPPORT:DESERT:3] would enable them to settle on deserts.

   [START_BIOME:ANY_FOREST]
   [BIOME_SUPPORT:ANY_LAKE:1]
   [BIOME_SUPPORT:ANY_FOREST:3]
   [BIOME_SUPPORT:ANY_RIVER:1]

Maybe they build retreats in a desert if there's a river in it, though more science must be done.

Or maybe when a desert is just next to a forest (with enough rainfall variation) and an elf retreats puts itself over the forest AND the desert.

If you give them [START_BIOME:ANY_DESERT] you will have a ton of desert elves. P.S. Desert elves don't bring wood for some reason... and they do like rivers in deserts, but they will settle else-were if there's no good river spots.

You can also give everyone multiple start biomes, and they will still try to migrate to their preferred biome.

Release the Kraken!

I've had elves bring Jaguars before. I believe those are desert animals so I believe it is possible for the elves to bring GDS as well. Potentially.

Jaguars can appear in any tropical biome, as well as deserts, so unfortunately it doesn't prove anything one way or another.

I can confirm that elves rarely bring GDS to trade. Over v0.31 I bought maybe one from the elves, and over v0.25 I bought four or five.

I was experimenting with that question lately with creatures in the giant savage tropical raw file.

My current theory is that it looks at the surroundings colonized by the elf civilization, then compares that surroundings list to the overland creature populations, then picks tameable creatures from the creatures that could reside in areas with the elves.

What worked for me was: after starting the game with unmodified raws, note what surroundings the elves come from and modify the creature raw to allow it to exist in those biomes. The next time the elves come, it will check against the modified raws and have a chance to bring the desired creature.

For example, in most games, even with savagery set to extremely high, the local elves will not have a savage tropical area and never bring giant cats. (Out of a few dozen tests, embarking in savage tropical forests, in only one did the elves bring them.)

After the game started, I noted that the elves were bringing jaguars, tigers, etc, but no giant varieties. So I went into creature savage tropical raw file for that save game and removed the [SAVAGE] tag from Giant Tigers and subsequently, the elves brought a giant tiger.

I like this approach because it doesn't change the raws during world generation or pre-embark, with possible unintended consequences, and you can undo it as soon as you have a breeding pair to start your population.

Also, I added [HUNTS_VERMIN] to all the giant cats, because that was just too funny to pass up.
