Do "on break" dwarves pull levers?
« on: April 01, 2012, 06:38:58 am »

I ask because lately I have started locking my vampires into a big control bunker, sealed from the outside world, so my vamp can open/close the gate/dam/whatever from inside. However, I have also wondered if he will refuse to pull them when on break, because that wouldn't be so helpful during a goblin siege.

if a dwarf is on break, eating, drinking or sleeping he will calmly doing so before doing any labor you assign him, including pulling levers and doing military stuff. Try to have multiple vampires in the same room. Also notince that vampires will get absurdly slow after a year or so because they don't drink any alcohol. This makes them pretty useless for most tasks but pulling a level might still work, science needed.

Sorry, could you rephrase, I don't understand?
I have found that the slowness is acceptable, just ensure the room is only as big as it needs to be so that the vamps don't ever have to walk far. It is faster than a load of panicked citizens who are too scared to approach the lever anyway!

Meh, I like having the levers secluded because then they are reliable (assuming they pull when "on break"), as it is totally impossible that the vampire will panic or tantrum (they have zero friends apart from each other and their only thought is "admired a fine trap lately"), and they are unreachable in the case of total fortress collapse.

Vampires do NOT pull levers when 'on break'.  And a vampire will after some years of going without booze be 'on break' most of the time, which makes them no good as dedicated emergency lever pullers.

Just drop them some booze from a chute above everyonce and a while.

This will do nothing.  Vampires never get thirsty, so they never drink booze, even when it is available.
