I had a thriving fortress when a goblin siege hit. Since I had essentially no militia with which to defend, the fortress fell pretty quickly. Immediately after losing, I tried reclaiming the fortress. When my new dwarven caraven got there, all the goblins were listed as friendly! In the seasons since, they have consistently helped me fight off new goblin sieges, ambushes, etc. Is this an intended feature, or a bug? Only mod I have installed is Stonesense.

It's possible that the guys from your new embark is in peace with those goblins. Could just be a bug though.

Alternatively, The goblins went mad from seeing all the dead dwarves and felt really bad.

If I recall correctly, this is a confirmed bug.

Not a bug, it's a feature present where hostile enemies become friendly on embark, to avoid senseless reclaim death.

Of course, there is a balance to this, where some hostiles randomly wait in ambush, to cause senseless reclaim death.

....In 31.25 my friendlies killed siegers and ambushers when they showed up, and I tested around with them - more often then not, siegers would even refuse to attack the friendlies, unless they themselves were being attacked.

I have (or had) the same thing in my fort.

The resident gobbos were hostile to all ambushers (and killed several), but were also hostile to all caravans and diplomats.

They finally turned hostile when my first siege arrived.
