Noob question dealing with ownership
« on: March 31, 2012, 03:19:52 pm »

Started my second fortress for 34.07. Set one as my dwarves to be miner and woodcutter because he was strong. I didn't know a dwarf could only have an ax or pick and not both. My bad. So I chopped some wood and wanted to switch him over to miner. I figured I could dump his ax and he would pick up the other pick to join in with the others. It took him a while to finally dump it, but by then I had changed my mind and figured i'd just have him as a woodcutter. I reclaimed the ax from the dump, but he wouldn't chop the wood. The ax had parentheses  around it. I made a wooden training ax, and he still wouldn't get it and chop wood. I've had other games where after trading, the items just sat there with parentheses around them. I guess that indicates ownership.

I remember reading in the release notes that ownership resets after 20 days, but i waited until next season and the ax still had parentheses and nobody would use it.
I wonder if anyone can clarify some of this for me. Its kind of irritating.

(parentheses) around an item's mean that is is of foreign origin relative to your fort. Stuff made on site will have no parentheses, while imported stuff, including starting embark equipment, will.

Make sure you only have one of the labors enabled on your dwarf. If he has both enabled, he'll get confused and may not do what you want him to do. If that still isn't working, toggle each on individually a few times, letting the game run a few seconds between each toggle, and that may reset his labors to where they need to be. Use the in game menus for this, as sometimes Dwarf Therapist doesn't seem to enable/disable mining/woodcutting quite properly.
