Surviving terrifying biome
« on: March 31, 2012, 11:11:37 pm »

The story goes like this. I managed to wall myself in a 4x4 area just after embark, then after piercing the aquifier below I though I was safe but then discovered butchering and shearing animals produced undead, mild fun was had.

But now, my whole surface is filled with the undead and I don't know how to deal with them. I managed to build a pillbox for marksdwarves to keep the waves at bay but they have become so many I can't really make a path for migrants or caravans to come.

Oh, and the ghosts... so many ghosts.

How do you often deal with these situations?

-edit. Sorry hit enter accidentally and it posted itself.

Thank you everyone for the help! I've since flooded the fortress I was working on and now have a new one going up.

And that is why you always embark with a portion of the zone outside of the terrifying biome. You've got to put a graveyard somewhere.

Slabs. Lots and lots of slabs. The surface is pretty much screwed unless you flood the whole thing with magma and wash the zombies off the edge that way. Give up on migrants/invasions.

Disc traps will stop zombie hoards, no problem.  Just a single file row with one bronze disc in each trap will work just fine.  Same goes for choke points in your fortress.  The problem is parts disposal.  I use a magma dump next to traps.  The body parts go in and never come back out.. though they may also never completely go away too and just burn forever (currently have a never ending "the dead walk!" siege because they are laying on the SMR).  Atom smashing works but i can't come up with a good way to automate it without deaths.

Don't bother with coffins.  Just dump your dwarves' bodies into the magma and make them a slab.  The real trouble is merchant guards.. they can't be slab'd! :(

You can get migrants and traders if you keep the surface clean of zombies.  The best way to do this is bait behind a hall of disc traps.  The zombies will just keep coming and getting shredded.  They will never progress forward either, they will just die as soon as they reanimate.  Periodically you'll have to clean them out though because they can get jammed.
