Troll and Rutherer
« on: March 31, 2012, 07:04:57 pm »

Alright, First I would like to say hello, since I just joined a moment ago. I started playing Dwarf Fortress last weekend, and have really been enjoying it.

Before I get to the point, I would like to tell the story of this fortress.

After lots of !fun! times, I have managed to set up a reasonably nice fortress. At this point I didn't have any military, except for a hunter who was going on elephant massacres. Now, I dug deep and hit a cavern where a spider and giant rat got into my base, I wiped out both losing only a dog and a useless dwarf. Then comes the fun part, I murdered 10 or so Crundles, and attempted to kill a rutherer...big mistake. We played a game of cat and mouse with my crappy militia, I did a ton of damage to it, but it killed 3 of my dwarves and crippled 3 others. At this point, I said "Screw it" and had my militia fall back into the fortress. Now after a few minutes, This Rutherer just sprints into my cage trap, The same Rutherer who has been a pain in my ass for the past hour. Then, literally, as soon as the cage was replaced this troll comes out of nowhere and flies into the trap as well.

TL;DR: I captured a troll and rutherer, What do I do with them?

I was considering putting the Rutherer up as some trophy in the hallway, but I am not sure.

So, What should I do with them?

Trophy idea seems nice. Maybe you can use it as an emergency sort of thing, where you can let it loose against goblins/kobolds/were-vampzombies if the odds are too stacked.

Try to tame the Troll. They pack quite a punch, and they can be sheared.

You can't tame trolls, they are sentient, learning creatures, and lack any sort of PET tag.

Rutherers on the other hand can be tamed and even if they can't be trained for war without modifying the raws they still pack quite a punch because they're BIG.

I read on the wiki that once an animal has killed a dwarf, It can't be tamed. Is that wrong?

Also, I did a dwarfload of damage on that thing http://i.imgur.com/LFlQK.png. Will it heal back or can I help it somehow?

And, As for the troll, I am thinking of dropping it in a pit and putting a bridge over it to drop unwanted visitors in, The only problem I am seeing is how to seal the bottom of the pit so the troll wont bust through my seal, I would think it would break down a wall.

That was fixed along with the addition of all of the new animal taming stuff.

Walls (both constructed and natural) can't be destroyed by building destroyers. The only things you'll have to worry about are things like doors, floodgates, and bridges. The bridge in your example should be safe, though.

Animals that are dwarf killers can now be tamed properly.

Some of that damage might heal, some of it might not. But unless the Rutherer is perpetually incapacitated it could still cause some serious damage if it got its paws on an invader.

Nothing can break down walls, nothing. If you dig a pit and then wall it off then it will contain a troll just fine.

Whoops, I goof'd. I embarked with some trolls (seperate entity that can use more "evil" stuff) and assumed they could be trainable :B

Oh...My...Armok...I was the digging the pit, and the troll broke its cage and started causing a ruckus. My crippled soldier proceeded to beat the troll to death with his crutch. I love this game!

He probably tried to pit the troll and it got loose because it was too far from the pit zone. When pitting hostile creatures from cages, the cage must be exactly 1 square away from the designated pit zone. If the cage is sitting more than 1 square away, the dwarf will release the creature and FUN will happen.

The wiki has a good guide on how to pit creatures without having FUN. I didn't know about this until I saw it mentioned in another thread, and I had accidentally my whole fortress with hostile critters in a mass-pit order.

I thought a dwarf's ability to move creatures without losing them was based on their animal training skill, or something. At least it seemed like trained animal trainers could move stuff farther to pit and not lose it as often.

Used to be true nowadays you can safely drag critters for miles. He probably melted the cage, happened to me.
