Under the current restrictions in my game, i resolved to not go beyond leather armor. I'm wondering though, will goblin weapons of copper bronze and iron be any less effective against leather armor than they would the regular clothing dwarves wear?

It protects better, but not much better.  You'll see more bruising and less cutting, but it's not specifically going to turn a siege around.

Worth doing, but don't get your hopes super-high.

an edged metal weapon will still consistently slice through the leather.  maybe a little less often, but nothing worth mentioning.  The leather should protect better against other forms of attacks you see during combat.

Armor never wears out like clothing, and it doesn't weight any more, so why not.

As far as SCIENCE goes, I've been playing nothing but leather (plus steel hats) for the last few forts and I can't tell if leather armor is stopping anything.  Seems like it's always "*steel bolt* one shots forgotten beast into pieces" or "Urist McChewToy is bitten in the head and shaken like infant"

Still, my last fort, 14 years, ended with me getting bored and creatively killing everyone before my military lost, so take that as an endorsement.

It should be quite effective at resisting blunt attacks, but I suggest at least a mail shirt over the top for everything else.

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

I get it anyways - it does help rookies working on armour skill, right? Right? Please tell me that those dogs didn't die in vain ;)

Consider trying some bone pieces, if your restrictions allow that, though for torso armor you'll still be on leather.  A bone helm should improve survivability a bit, at least.
