Dorfs and clothing still bugged?
« on: March 26, 2012, 12:15:42 pm »

So I had *carefully* released my vampire to get some clothes, and after a while she was "done," so I put her back into containment. Then, even though she had a sandal (she only claimed one...), she kept ranting about being embarrassed about not wearing shoes. I then proceeded to dump shoes (and other clothing) on top of her to keep her happy, but no, she decides to claim some shoes/socks, but not use said shoes/socks, and continues to rant about not having shoes even though she has some claimed shoes on the same tile as her (they aren't forbidden or anything and are in her burrow, so she could just pick them up and put them on). In fact, when she was tantruming, she picked up a shoe and threw it while she was wining about not having shoes!

Also, my other vampire had been updating the stockpile records (turns out, that postpones nakedness thoughts), so I dumped clothes on him. He claimed some, and put them on after he was done bookkeeping, and had a full outfit on (I checked). But then he too started ranting about not having shoes on even though he is wearing shoes and has another pair claimed that's right next to him!

So my 2 vampires (one not important that has a motor nerve injury, the other my eternal bookkeeper) are both very unhappy/melancholy, tantruming and have yet to go berserk, wining about having no sock even though they can VERY EASILY get them, or are even WEARING socks. What gives?

I dont think it's bugged, i think the thoughts might just take a while to subside. WHICH IS ANNOYING. I think that they should get a *good thought* from getting new clothes to counteract the bad thought. It's really frustrating having millions of children tantrum-ing about being uncovered when they're fully clothed!

yeah, i'm having problems with clothing too, especially with children, any child born in the fortress looks like a ticking time bomb of "fun" now
they usually go berserk at age TWO, and that occationally months AFTER they claim clothes

i agree, i think that an "i got new clothes" good thought should counter the bad ones from not having clothes

My understanding is that thoughts, negative or positive, take a year to disappear fully. The numerical effect on the dorf diminishes by half after six months, though.

Lots of statues, more individual bedrooms, waterfalls, kittens for everyone, lavishly prepared leaf roasts... masterwork furniture. Moar good thoughts then bad thoughts = net gain P

Unfortunately, two of those (cats and waterfalls) are a death sentence to your framerate.

I want to tell you they were bad men, cephalo.  I want to tell you that with a better overseer the Fortress never would've gotten so bad someone would get offed in a pointless fisticuffs.
But the sad truth charlie?
It was inevitable.

Heheheh, wonder what it would take I think 8 statues would = 8 happy thoughts? Or do you need 8 different kinds of things. Cause you could build a very nice vampire prison. Adamantine, Obsidian, engraved =P One of every piece of furniture. It makes sense too vamparism tend to be synonymous with nobility. In lore...

I haven't done any !!SCIENCE!! on the above but its a thought...

I have had a dwarf die from melancholy in a young fort (1 yrs) were I was paying more attention to experimenting with military uniforms then anything else.

The game actually has code to make certain thoughts cancel other ones - for example, a dwarf can never have both the "minor injuries" and "major injuries" thoughts at the same time. The problem is that there is no happy thought for being clothed.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

This might be a silly question, but did the tantruming vampire claim a shoe/sock that wasn't in her containment area?

No, it was in his/her area. They just insist on not taking it. It may have something to do with that the vamp has one shoe/sock already, on one foot, but not the other. What I'm thinking is that they may think they are fully clothed (so they don't grab claimed clothes) yet they aren't, and complain about it. The compliant also isn't an old one, it keeps coming around again and again, the vamp will go very unhappy, recover somewhat, be released to cry on the countess, then be contained again, and then they go from content back down to very unhappy (or miserable) and it repeats again. Also, when they are released, they will claim and get more clothing, but never socks, they even go to the extent of having 2 pairs of trousers and a loincloth on, and 2 caps at the same time, and when they are done with that, they will show "no job" instead of grabbing some shoes (I have plenty of them too, and socks).

I thought "satisfying acquisition" was supposed to be the counterbalance to getting angry about nakedness.

I'm also getting this, just that in my case the dwarves I assigned to a squad don't have shoes indeed, the uniform I created had high boots, that they couldn't find any, but since I made sure "partial matches" was checked, I was thinking that they being unable to find high boots would try to match down something similar like shoes which I have plenty...

is there no way to have them do that? or does "partial matches" only work for materials?

The default uniforms have general categories like "footwear", last time I checked in 31.25 there was no way to make an uniform using categories like "headwear" or "footwear", has this been fixed? and if so how does it work?
