No, I am saying that the reproductive technique is analogous.

The spores of males are released like pollen from their beards.
The female's beards collect these spores.

Thus, the closest thing a dwarf has to outright sex is "kissing", when their beards directly touch.

It also implies that the fullness and quality of the beard is a unisexual statement of attractiveness, sexual potency, and status of that particular dwarf.  Calling another "beardless" would be a terrible and unforgivable affront. Shaving would be considered mutilation.

Nowhere did I suggest that dwarves were in any way vegetable in origin.

By default, female dwarves don't have beards.

Are you sure!?  I will have to check the raws on that....

[CASTE:FEMALE]
The gender tag lets it know how breeding works.
      [FEMALE]
      [MULTIPLE_LITTER_RARE]
To add beards, put square brackets around the following:
      BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:FACIAL_HAIR_TISSUE_LAYERS
   [CASTE:MALE]
      [MALE]
      [BODY_DETAIL_PLAN:FACIAL_HAIR_TISSUE_LAYERS]

This must be a fairly recent thing... last time I checked was admittedly before 31, but they had beards and mustaches then.

Perhaps toady felt weird giving women mutton chops?

Allright, in lieu of the facial hair being missing, I am open to alternatives on how the spores do their thing.

I don't know about anyone else, but short women with facial hair sound like a pretty great fantasy to me.

Probably living in corn country makes me see that description somewhat more literally than you intended it.  Besides, I liked the idea that the baby lives on a fungus growth attached to the mother.  It kind of united our theories.   ;D

No idea, when the beards went bye bye...it is what it is.

Though it cut down on the potential if Toady added a hair-styling industry.

It would have needed to be back in 40d at the soonest. I remember when 31.x first came out seeing the line about beards in the raws.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
