This -is- productive though! You're working on teamwork skills and troubleshooting solutions on an international level! :D

Did you quantum stockpile your seeds and then forget to undump them?

Also, do you have a stockpile somewhere set to accept plump helment spawn?

Finally, a stupid question - how many dwarves have got Farming (Fields) enabled, and are they active in the military?

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

If it turns out to be a bug I might have had something similar, the only difference is my planter only waits for a while (maybe a few days) until he notices the field. On a related note, sometimes my mason or carpenter will sit around with no job for a while even though I gave them one via manager with pop<20.

Maybe there's a glitch somewhere in the deep job code, but so subtle that nobody's noticed until a recent change aggrevated it?

PS: This is a very off-chance, but make sure the farm isn't forbidden (this might have happened with a d->b->f or possibly d->b->d command).

Dwarven economics are still in the experimental stages. The humans have told them that they need to throw a lot of money around to get things going, but every time the dwarves try all they just end up with a bunch of coins lying all over the place.

Have you tried outdoor farming?
Have you tried another type of crop than Plump Helmet?
Have you tried constructing an underground plot somewhere else in the fort?
Have you gone to the z, stocks screen to verify that you have plump helmet spawn not marked forbid or dump?
Have you checked your planter's personality traits to see if he is a lazy procrastinator? :)

I just thought of another possibility.  All seeds on the map are counted in the Stocks screen, even those already planted or owned by a caravan.  Providing your bookkeeping accuracy is high enough, you can decompress the seed type with Tab and it'll list each individual seed.  Unowned and unoccupied seeds will be brown in color, and while you're there make sure they aren't forbidden.  You can even zoom to a seed's location from the Stocks screen.

Are any of the tiles of the farm plot marked "light"?

The dwarves are such pedantially lazy slobs that they will refuse to plant in that field if even one tile is of the incorrect type for that crop.

that depends.  i think they go top right to bottom left.  if any tile in that path is not of the right type, they act as the OP is dealing with.

my farms work because they are like this -
Code: [Select]
UUUU
UAAA
UUUU
my farmers plant the rightmost column, then the first tile of the next column to the left.  my plan is to deconstruct those plots so that when i rebuild i have....

Code: [Select]
1111
2333
2444
plot sequence of build shown, with plot 3 being aboveground crops.

Upon further inspection Weird wins! On stupid tile was light on both farms. *facepalm*

Thanks for the help.

Are the seeds msrked for dumping? Because dfhack autodump won't remove the dump inside of bags.
