I need to interview somebody who smokes
« on: March 28, 2012, 06:27:44 pm »

I need to interview a smoker for a school health project. It's just 8 questions. If anyone here has experience smoking, I would greatly appreciate it if you could answer these questions:

1. At what age did you begin to smoke cigarettes?

2. Why did you start to smoke?

3. Do you believe that smoking is dangerous to your health?

4. When you began smoking, did you believe that it would become a habit for you?

5. Do you believe that substances released from cigarettes can affect the health of non-smokers?

6. How do you feel when non-smokers ask you if you would mind not smoking?

7. How do you prefer to be asked not to smoke?

8. Do you have any message at all for a young person who is just starting to experiment with cigarettes?

Again, thanks so much if anyone could answer these questions for me.

Does it matter if I'm an ex-smoker? I'm still fairly recently quit.

1 - Eleven

2 - Told it relieved stress, seemed like an 'adult' thing to do, came from a family of smokers.

3 - Yes

4 - No

5 - Yes

6 - Depends on the situation. Usually don't mind.

7 - Politely and with a reason stated.

8 - Don't. It is an expensive habit that only exists to sate its own cravings. I know very few people who smoke and don't regret the decision.

I work in a drug dependence research lab and I used to work on smoking studies before switching over to a marijuana study. Boy, could I find some people for you to interview...

People start as tiny-ass kids. Marijuana, too. My record that I've heard? Age 6.

Well I see someone already put one in. I was gonna but I'm not sure if it would be redundant. Well might as well fill it out since I'm still a current smoker and I like filling these things out anyway.

That's perfectly fine, one interview is good but two is even better. Thanks.

1. 19

2. many reasons: it was social, i enjoyed it when friends bummed me a cigarette and (oddly) i was curious how addiction felt

3. obviously it is, no doubt there

4. yes

5. only if they are really exposed to the smoke (e.g. waiter in smoking bar)

6. irritated unless it is their house

7. i prefer to be offered the option to smoke somewhere where i will not bother anyone

8. yes, weed is better, better for you and has thus far not been conclusively linked to cancer, heart disease and other issues with cigarettes. also they are much more exciting when they are novel, when it is rote routine and you have to get them even if you are broke, it is really damn annoying to smoke

Normally I lurk, I see the OP has already enough answers, but I feel like answering these questions, so here goes...

1. At what age did you begin to smoke cigarettes?
Off and on from maybe 12. Full time from 17. I quit at 30.

2. Why did you start to smoke?
I just always thought I would smoke when I was grown up. Everyone did.

3. Do you believe that smoking is dangerous to your health?
Yes, usually.

4. When you began smoking, did you believe that it would become a habit for you?
I knew that it would be difficult to quit before I started.

5. Do you believe that substances released from cigarettes can affect the health of non-smokers?
Yes.

6. How do you feel when non-smokers ask you if you would mind not smoking?
Fine by me. Glad they asked instead of suffering in silence.

7. How do you prefer to be asked not to smoke?
Honestly.

8. Do you have any message at all for a young person who is just starting to experiment with cigarettes?
If you ever want to quit. Just stop smoking. You can just stop, it doesn't have to be complicated.
If you don't want to quit, then enjoy it without kidding yourself about the health and psychological issues - There is no real good reason to smoke unless you enjoy it - it is not cool or functional in any way I can think of apart from to make you less healthy and poorer.

Meh, sure...why not? I've been quit about 12 years now, but...

1. 16. Graduated up to pipes and cigars by age 18 or so, but continued to smoke cigarettes as well. I quit at 24, with a few backslides up until about 26.

2. Not really sure. Was overseas at the time, probably felt "grown-up" and it was something I could get away with.

3. Yes.

4. Didn't really think about it, but probably didn't care either way.

5. Yes.

6. It's a fair cop. I was always a polite smoker.

7. Never really had it happen much, to be honest. Just a simple, "Sorry, would you mind taking that outside?" would suffice.

8. Don't. Not only is it not worth the long-term health issues, but it's freakin' expensive now. The 500% price increase in a pack of cigarettes was a big impetus to quit.
