Seems we have traction benches. Would I be able to chain a dwarf that's insane due to a failed mood to prevent him from hurting himself or others, while force-feeding him? I guess not after reading Wiki, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

(Just about having another one kill himself, it seems like my moral obligation to help the poor creature.)

No, you cannot chain an insane dwarf to a traction bench, for it is made for Hospital use.

And by insane, you mean berserk?

It's too bad insane/melancholic dwarves starve to death. Having a Dwarven Funny Farm sounds like an amazing diversion from your normal fortress routine. A small 5x5 room full of crazed dwarves slamming into each other.

you could accuse insane dwarfs of crimes and cause them to be locked in jail.

you can cage berserk dwarfs with a cage trap.

I suppose that will have to do for the violent ones.

However, I would really love to force feed them (primarily the suicidal ones dying of dehydration).

maybe possible to use DFHack to give them an eat/drink job while insane.

You could turn them to vampires before going insane, then they wouldn't die.

Wasn't there a bug that caused Dwarfs placed on the traction bench getting forgotten and locked there?

Perhaps you could try reproduce it, or forbid the bench when the Dwarf is on it, turn off all healthcare labours (except feeding and giving water of course), and then drive the Dwarf insane?

Great! So now instead of attempting to find insane dwarves and lock them up to preserve them, we are instead locking up sane dwarves and attempting to keep them alive while we drive them insane. Leave it to the DF forums to find a method that gives the same result but completely perverts the intentions. (Unless your intentions are to get insane, locked up dwarves to laugh at :P)
