Mass killing dwarves - repercussions?
« on: March 24, 2012, 11:25:24 pm »

More specifically children. 50 of them and my fps can take no more. So I'm planning on having about 80% of them meet a grizzly end, but many of them have a huge list of friends and family - won't their deaths cause huge happiness deductions amongst most of my fortress?

I feel like I'm already on the brink of a tantrum spiral, with dwarves complaining about long patrol duties at the same time as complaining about being relieved from duty... But I can't deal with these kids any longer and with my pop cap not working, these guys drew the short straws.

Also, if I were to atom smash them, will they all become ghosts? I can't seem to slab dwarves that appear as "missing" and already have a ghost vampire looming over the drawbridge to my fort (which is actually pretty great).

So yeah, any info or suggestions on how to remove children safely would be great!

Magma. Also, enjoy your tantrum spiral.

Put all of them on a retractable bridge high above the dining hall, and pull the lever. Plenty of witnesses to the deaths, so none of them will be "missing," so less concern about ghosts.

I'm sure their friends and family won't mind too much.

"Upset about being relieved of duty" is caused by the dwarf not having much of a civilian life. Give them a non-combat skill, like pump operator or engraver or something, and let them get good at it and the thought will go away.

Your military also enjoys killing things. Give them the "took joy in slaughter" thought somehow. Also, really nice militia housing and tactical waterfalls.

For child disposal? It's best to get them while they're young, when the militiadwarves enter the danger room with their babies.

Make sure you have a large, fully-functional jail to deal with tantrumers who start fist fights and vandalize.

I would also recommend to reduce the amount of children in the init file. It starts out as max 100 children, max 1000% of children relative to adults. Set it two 20 20 and your number of children will be much more managable. Or set one of them to zero and get no children at all.
As far as I understand the max population it is only checked once per year the moment your liaison leaves the map. If at that point your current population is higher than the cap you will not get any new migrant waves. Which means you usually end up with a lot more dwarfs than the cap.
