hunter can't find path
« on: March 25, 2012, 04:12:23 am »

so I have two hunters that are getting a lot of life target practice but suddenly they both started to give me job cancellation spam:
Urist McHunt cancels hunt, could not find path.
One of them is outdoors and the other one one is chilling in the main meeting area. Is it possible to get that message because they killed all wildlife they can get to? The only wild animals on my map are two birds high up in the air and some stuff in the caverns that are walled off.
Wildlife eventually gets renewed, right? So eventually there will be new stuff to hunt? Maybe they are now good enough that they kill of wildlife faster than it respawns?

I was getting this spam, too. After I walled off a couple of rhesus apes who were stealing my stuff (although I was cheating and caught them inside obsidian walls created with dfhack). So I guess in my case the hunter already picked one of them as target and then could not find the path anymore after the area was walled off.

As for your case it will probably be the birds. Hunter decides to kill them while they are sitting on the ground, then realizes that they are too high up in the air.

And yes, new wildlife should wander onto your map from the edges eventually.

A Hunter needs to be able to path to their target in order to try and kill it.  They can't reach the birds, so they won't even try to hunt them.  They'll just sit around and complain until something comes in that they can reach.

There is a limit to the number of groups of wild animals which can be on the map at once.  The birds high up in the air are preventing any other groups of surface wild animals from appearing.  Once they are dead or leave under their own power, more wild animals will appear.

It is possible to completely wipe out your local wildlife population after years of systematic hunting.  Once that happens, you won't see any wild animals for a long time, if ever.
