Tantrum Spirals and you
« on: March 25, 2012, 04:43:29 am »

So...how do you deal with these in the newest version?

Legendary Dining Room with a mist generator, modest or better bedroom for every dwarf, high quality food...first goblin sieges and 4 military dwarves die and the entire fortress starts killing themselves because the 4 dwarves that died had 30 brothers, 18 children, 20 grandparents and 5 parents...each.

Replace the mist generator with a drop pit designed for pet-plosion, and your dwarfs will stop caring about anything any more.

I found that too making an 3x3 room for every dwarves and children individually with :
-a bed
-a door
-a coffer
-a cabinet

is a great way to prevent the tantrum spiral that will destroy your fort if your dwarves have no way to get regular happy thought after a few accidental (or goblin-war induced) death on a long lived (meaning that everyone has several friends and family) fortress.

Of course, even better if all of these are manufactured by skilled dwarves .
And if you can put a well , again manufactured by skilled dwarves helps too, as every dwarves will get there and admire it regularly.

Before i went this way, i lost many many forts to tantrum spiral from losing only a few dwarves in goblin war on long lived forts.

Everyone in the military. After the first few dozen deaths, no one gives a crap. (I'm being serious, a few dozen = entire fortress full of hardened veterans).

I had some goblinite clothing left over and the dwarves rushed to get clothed, so I had no troubles at all.

Massive dining hall that can seat 100 dwarves with the most expensive material furniture I can get. Specialist cooks and brewers making the best food and drink. Mead on full scale industrial production levels. 3x5 bedrooms with furniture for every citizen with smoothed walls. A rehabilitation jail with expensive chain restraints in engraved room and food/drink stockpile adjacent. As long as I make a point of  keeping on top of dead needing buried I never get tantrums.

I kill a few children at a time 3-4, if you do it gradually they don't tantrum.

How, might I ask, does one have 5 parents, or 20 grandparents? I myself have a mother and a father.. didn't know you could have any more... and, supposing you can only have a mother and father, you can only have a maternal grandmother, maternal grandfather, paternal grandmother and paternal grandfather. I guess, all the better for the 30 brothers, so they all had enough grandma cookies to go around?

What I think we're saying is we need dwarves to riot and break things more often.

I think it was hyperbole, meant as humor.  At least, I chuckled.  :)

I've probably gone through 20-30 dwarf deaths with a couple tantrums but no spirals (might be getting close though). I had statues EVERYWHERE with legendary dining room, food drinks, all had individual rooms (nothing in them), soap for baths, pets running around, statue room.

The only way to deal with a tantrum spiral is to live through one.

As soon as one starts I grit my teeth and see it through to the end.  The survivors of one tantrum spiral will generally make up the core of the fort--the unshakable stable, traumatized backbone of your population that will remain hard at work sustaining your vital industries and repairing necessary wells, levers and such while your migrants flip out.

Sometimes its worth letting a founder die, just to stabilize the other founders via terrible trauma

my longest fort so far only lasted 10 years (DF keeps getting updated or the fort dies from something else), but no spirals so far

for me, individual bedrooms, legendary dining hall, and masterwork booze and food (a variety of it) keeps the dwarves so doped up, nothing phases them.  of course, the last time i had this all set up...  was last year.  nowadays, migrants bring a lot more family members, so i suppose i'd get fairly close to a few isolated tantrums, but no spiral.
