Hunting vermin to survive
« on: August 13, 2006, 10:10:00 pm »

Just thinking that dwarves doing this tend to put this ahead of other tasks, like butchering animals and cleaning fish. Basically tasks that bring in real food. Possibly need to change priority of food creation tasks?

Well, if they're doing it it's because they're in danger of starving to death, like, right now; they don't have the time or energy to do anything else.  Even if butchering a fish might bring in food eventually, they've grown so hungry that that rat they just saw on the ground looks irresistible, and it's right there...

But really, they spend far more time trying to get the vermin as opposed to cleaning a fish and eating that.

Having them think two steps ahead is a little rough -- it might be worth it if I can then make them fight over the finished product, eventually resorting to live dwarf part eating and so on.  I mean, the adventure mode monsters spit out the chunks.  What's that?

There's a disturbing lack of cannibalism in this game.

Of  course, if you added it, there would be a disturbing amount of cannibalism in this game.

We'll have to go for that happy middle point, like nail biting or something.  If dwarves have nails.  Maybe it's just smooth skin up there.

It seems logical to me that they have adamantite fingernails which can't be bitten.  You don't hear loud curses from the Carpenter every time the hammer misses the nail.
