Whats up with the new version?
« on: March 24, 2012, 05:03:56 am »

I know there are supposed to be bugs in this one but this version really teases me :D. Got a lot of thieves and snatchers but when i put a pet on a restraint my dwarfs keep putting them on and off the chains. Somehow these snatchers killing my weak dwarfs too while constantly handling the pets in the hallway.

Also my dwarfs are drinking miles away from my fort while i have 400+ booze, one ambush and the fun begins :D.

This game's really weird anyway, first migrant wave, 4 useless dwarfs with 6 children. 2nd migrant wave 3 useless dwarfs 4 children, 3th migrant wave 52 dwarfs flooding in, all useless low skilled fishing/farming/hunting and barely any combat/social skills and again about half of them are children.

Then i got this humanoid creature attacking me, closed the gate and left a useless fisher outside, he ran for ages and i went on with daily business, when i get back to the poor fisher he is standing idle with a bruised rib. I check the map and the creature drowned in a little 3x3 pond :D.

And i noticed my dwarfs bringing dump-marked items to a mystic place i can't seem to find. When i place a garbage area and dump-mark items around it they won't drop it there and i can't seem to follow them and when i do find them without the dump-marked item, theres no dump place anywhere nearby....

My previous game, i got ambushed, a bit early but just enough military to fend them off. But then all my importand people came out of there hole, from my mayor to furnace opperators. I guesed they where getting the wounded but they had "no job".

-
Anybody switched back yet till a more "reliable" version comes out or am i the only one having these weird issues?

Hm. I started a new world with 34.06 yesterday. Dumping items to a garbage zone works fine for me. Just like it used to do in earlier versions. So I canīt confirm it to be broken.

the think with all the children.... which version are you playing? I havn't had the useless/child waves for some time now and regularly get masters in some skills. migration so far for me: 1st wave, 1 kid 2 adults, sweet little family. 2nd, 5 adults. Not had 3rd, but it's probably going to be slightly bigger.

the chained animal is easy. It is also still assigned a pasture and your dwarfs keep bringing it back and forth from the pasture to the chain.

to find the dumped items, go to the stocks screen (I assume you have a bookkeeper with perfect accuracy set), press tab, find one of the dumped things and zoom to it.

the thing with the booze is weird though. I don't know how big your fort is, but it's possible that not everyone who wants a drink can get one because it's spread over too few barrels, which will happen if your farmers are good.

the humanoid creature was probably a were-creature. Your dwarf tried to punch it and it dodged into the water. It happens and this is definately not the first time it has happened.

Set a burrow for military alert during ambushes and sieges and nearly everyone stays inside just fine.

So no, I don't experience most of your problems.

Most of your issues seem to be the game or something you could fix yourself. Only the child migrations are a bit strange and not from 34.05, so I assume also not from 34.06

Seems plausible, but i'm sure i never had this problem and i'm used to pasture all my animals. Hope it helps.

No not set on perfect, the 3th wave was 52 dwarfs so i really needed him to mine more room for these. But didn't know i could find dumped with it :D.

Plausible as well, i just had a 3x3 booze area and when i suddenly had 75+ dwarfs in my fort i had too many things to do.

I lolled :D, sad Urist McAwesome never got the credit :D.

Never got into this, read a bit about it but i'm kinda clueless,

Am i supposed to mark the outside area as a burrow, and assign my military to it by adding a alert? Really hard to grasp this concept, probably easy when you understand it but right now it feels really awkward. Can't really fiddle around with it since i don't have a proper military yet, just set my magma furnaces up.

Yeah was just wondering... i don't have to much experience under my belt accept one very successful long game.

Most of your issues would have been more suited to a title of "Is it this version or is it me". Half of the time it's you, the other half the game as it's always been. Only the child migrations are a bit strange and not from 34.05, so I assume also not from 34.06

I'll download it anyway, thanks for the explaining.

we're at 34.06 now, changelog is in the anouncement sub-forum.

The thing with the animal is something I experienced myself. I set it to a chain but didn't remove it from the pasture and the poor thing got dragged all around.
The thing with the bookkeeper is quite useful to find out who has that masterwork steel axe you had meant for your militia commander but seems to have vanished. Or, actually, to find someone's corpse if people can't reach it and you get spammed with job cancelations and want to forbid his stuff but can't find the corpse. Not to mention actually knowing how much booze you really have!

And yeah, untill dwarf invent how to use mugs, they'll each claim a barrel. Let's say you have 10 barrels each with a lot of booze, still only 10 dwarfs can drink at any one time. The rest will go have a drink of water any odd place. You can actually stear this a bit by making an activity zone as water source near drinkable water and use (o), (z), (d) to set it to zone only drinking.

With the burrow, you paint any area that is safe during an attack. Underground farm, stockpiles, dining hall, bedrooms, workshops, the whole ticket. It works over multiple z-levels and alos in places you don't 'see' yet, so if a level is completely safe, just go to the far corner, enter, go to opposite corner, go down z-levels to the last level you use that is also always completely safe, enter. Then pick out the area's that are safe but on a level where some parts are no-go (sealed off above ground farm), give it a name like alert, done.
When an ambush arrives, go to (m)ilitary, (a)lerts and go to the 3rd row, civ alerts. Now select it and activate it. From that moment on, civilians will only take jobs within the area you marked and any jobs outside that area will be canceled. The only ones who ignore this sometimes are children, they might still walk out to look at where mommy was cutting the tree and why she suddenly stopped and ran to the fort, and cats. You might get a lot of job cancelations, especially if someone gets caught outside and kiled and people start telling you that they won't pick up his socks, because they're not allowed to go there.

Yeah i usually setup 2 awesome fountains in my meeting hall, but this time it was about 60 tiles from the river so made it a huge project, should have made a temporary quick solution.

Thanks, i think i get it. I don't really mind children getting chopped, they seem to drink and eat more, or atleast the parties they throw consumes more stuff :D, i hava double the size of food industry i normally have yet i don't see that much difference then when i have +-80 grownups. And i always buy cats and breed a couple so that should not be a big deal either.
