Drowning training for super-fast endurance
« on: March 22, 2012, 01:04:45 pm »

So yeah, I can confirm drowning will train your endurance. I think some people were wondering whether it is so.

You can easiry do it yourself too. Here's a very simple method: Go swim under a bridge across a river, back and forth. If it's the regular kind of bridge this is completely harmless - you'll be "drowning" for 5 squares but even a very low agility average endurance (I always play that way now) crutch-walking dwarf on sneak mode on the ground will make it across without a problem.

I macroed it, and went from above average to superior endurance in literally minutes.

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Yes.

Apparently this can give even a peasant superracely endurance in a few minutes so it's even worse than the sneakily crutch-swimming across the ocean trick.

Edit: To see whether I had exaggerated, I took a fresh peasant, average everything, and went macroing swimming under the bridge. In literally 2 minutes he had developed superior endurance and toughness. I'm sure he would have made it to superhuman like the previous character, but the experiment was interrupted by an ice-encasement situation.

I discovered this myself when I tried to train a new adventurer up from dabbling swimmer using the new ramps.

Wait, now you need to train yourself in order to drown? I always thought it was pretty easy. Just toss the dwarves into a watery room and make sure they can't escape! Although I suppose it would make sense that the Drowning skill would increase endurance, seeing as if you survive to training regimen, you're probab...

Clearly, you're going to need to have training in drowning if you're going to be a Drownball champion.  Not everyone's as much a natural at it as Fighter McWarrior!

Quite. Only the most empty minds can successfully master Drownball, and failing that, you must have extensive training in drowning to achieve even middling success.
