One tip, use wooden shields, not iron, as the shield material is irrelevant for defense.
Would a wooden shield be more likely to be broken\destroyed in combat as compared to a copper shield?

Shields don't get broken/destroyed in combat. Dragon fire or clown fire might destroy it though. Although at that point the Dwarf would probably already be dead so it doesn't really matter

Also, the wood is lighter so your dwarves will be faster.

Shields > dragon fire.  Not sure if a wooden one would work there, but steel does!

(A dragon breathed on a number of my soldiers.  I'm pretty sure no one took a scratch.)

.35 was supposed to change that, making items more susceptible to igniting

Yeah, the dragon-breathing happened in 31.25.

You need to discover the map feature "magma sea" or "volcano". So you need to find a safe way to peek at the magma sea and then youŽll get the ingame message "you have discovered a great magma sea" or the like. After that you will be able to create magma workshops. Simply finding magma somewhere on the map is not enough.

I'm fairly certain this isn't true. Any open space above magma should allow for a magma forge as long as some part of the forge is over the open space.

I'm pretty sure I've built magma forges on magma without revealing the magma sea, and I have no idea why that specific magma spot would be necessary.
