I've wanted to get my family watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes for some time now, but I'm the only person who enjoys sitting in front of a computer screen to get my anime fix, or so I can tell. So I've hit upon the idea of burning all 110 episodes onto DVD for them. My little brother, at least, I think will enjoy them in a couple years (he's 12 now, but I'll tell him to give them a shot when he's 14 or 15.)

Anyway, I can get the episodes (subbed) in two formats: .avi and .mkv. My question is, could I burn them 5 at a time onto DVD, and then put some sort of menu screen in so the watcher can choose the episode? And just as importantly, will the subtitles remain when I pop it into a DVD player?

1. You really should pay for things you enjoy instead of ripping off the creators.
2. It's a bit wasteful to pre-emptively burn ~22 DVDs on the off chance that someone may enjoy watching them in several years time.
3. Just burn one to check if things work out as planned and if your intended audience actually like the show.

IIRC you need a modded and/or old DVD player to play burned DVDs.




An alternative (if you have a laptop and a relatively modern TV) is to play them on your computer and have a video/sound output to your TV/speakers.

I use 'CONVERT X to DVD v3.0.0.1'. It converts, burns and has the option to add subtitles to each episode. It gives you a menu where you can select which episode to watch.

Also: piracy is ebil and you really don't need an old DVD player. At least I don't.

I can't. Legend of the Galactic Heroes has never been released in the United States legally; you can only get it through fansubs, because it's so big that no American company will buy the show, hire voice actors, or stream it on a TV channel. And my family don't speak Japanese.

I'm not ripping off the creators the way I would be if I were burning Evangelion or something else that's been exported; I'm not taking away the chance to buy a licensed version because no licensed version exists. There's no DVDs, no VHSes, no licensed merch, no nothing.

That aside; ya, you can put in menu screens with dvd creation software. I'm not sure how or with what software, but google should help there. And yeah, what lordcooper said in #2; it's kinda early to be considering it. Unless you seriously expect them to all magically vanish in the next 3 years, there isn't really a point of burning any, particularly as you don't even know if he will like them. Hell, media formats and such change often enough that you may not even want a DVD version 3 years from now.

Also, if you want to fit more episodes per-disc (cheaper, more flexible/reliable method), I would suggest you make them data discs instead. With the right file format, you can cram an entire season of a show on 1 DVD.

Only setback, you'll have to play them off the DVD in VLC or similar media program.

Vague curiosity, but no chance of being able to just jack the computer into your TV? Right kit would let you do that fairly easily, I think, if the TV's compatible with it.

Mind you I'm not sure of the details involved (never bothered trying, m'self -- don't own a TV) but I know a fair amount of folks that do just that.

Just use Windows DVD maker, it comes with any decent version of Windows and is free
