Stairway to the stygian lake
« on: March 20, 2012, 10:15:24 am »

In my current map, the ground level starts at around 170, the cavern I found is at around 130.  And it is really huge.
I found a dark and narrow cave entrance a while back, it faded into the darkness. I sent my miner there to see what was there, found a dark single tile stairway. The stairway was very deep, yet narrow, so narrow that there was usually only a upward and a downward ramp in each level (something like ^v).  Soon I found, the stairway led to a huge underground chasm.

The deepest place I ever reached was at 50, where a huge underground water system was located. I wonder if there are another cavern beyond the water.

well, ramps can be naturally occurring of course. I was really hoping you genuinely meant stairway, and it potentially led to some underground structure, other than a slade one. Specifically something totally new.

Most caverns are connected that way.

What I think we're saying is we need dwarves to riot and break things more often.

When you send someone to explore, remember to bring fare for the boatman.

Well, there are 3 caverns in total and it sounds like you found a site where the 1st and 3rd caverns are naturally connected. Not groundbreaking but it is an aesthetically pleasing find.

You should build it into your fortress. Maybe the dwarves are guarding the lake or maybe some sort of military intitiation thing is to go down there. A creepy evil dark lake with a thin stairway carved down a cliff face is a pretty sweet feature. My 1st cave has an area I call the Sink which is like a sunken area below the level of the lake but walled off from the water naturally. Caves have some of the coolest features to work with.

Possible cave within the caverns. Just beautiful, it's a shame Dwarfs are too busy being mauled to death by jabberers to admire their surroundings more often :/

Besides that one awesome door that is.

Ah, yes, they are ramps. But they just reminded me of spiral stairways. :P

So they are 3 caverns intead of a huge on? I makes sense now.
