Most effective way to get rid of Hippo Corpses?
« on: March 20, 2012, 11:45:45 am »

I just embarked on a quest of epic difficulty. A 4x4 embark to an outpost called "Shipwatched". The only problem is this: So many friggin hippo corpses walking around mutilating my dwarves. I've tried reclaiming it about 5 times now (I REALLY want this place. It's the only area on my map that has a natural waterfall), failing each time due to those darn hippos. So, forums, what's the most effective way to get rid of zombies? :D

Hole yourself underground and train until you can take them.

Also, are waterfalls really that great, they sort of just encourage bad pathing in the dwarves.

Eh, in my area, yeah. It regularly rains dwarf blood, gotta wash all that off and promote some sort of good thoughts. Can't have all unhappy dwarves, you know.

I have some success with hammer dwarves but haven't fought any hippos yet.  You could try disc traps and xbows?  Atom smashing the remains.  Also, check and see if there is a biome in your embark that doesn't resurrect.  You will stand a better chance digging in there.

-sigh- I just tried two more times. I even edited the RAW files and set my dwarves speed to 0 to give them a chance. They still all get slaughtered within the first 5 or so minutes. 'Tis a sad day indeed. I guess I'll go find a better spot or something.

Try embarking with a hatch cover, then dig a hole right where your miner stands, "meeting" area right there, place the hatch cover over your 1x1 surface hole, thats a good start, dont come out for anything, also maybe embark with wood and make sure you have soil for farming. I doubt undead hippos can smash through hatch covers

I watched a zombie dwarf tear off a girls dress and hit her with it so hard it became lodged in her skull.

Only problem is, I already have a 3x3 staircase leading down into my start of a fortress. Plus all the dead stuff in the fortress just rises from the dead to kill my people :/

Consider herding them away with a vampire adventurer. I believe that zombies are not aggressive towards vampires.

Are you sure hippos aren't too big to be immune to atomsmashing?

Hatch covers should work so long as they're not made of wood.

how would I get said vampire at start?
It would be a very long-term project of making an adventurer, finding a vampire, getting infected and then going to kill the hippo corpses. I don't think it'll help as the 'wildlife' will probably be back by the time you get the fort going.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

You dug a 3x3 stairway from the surface in that kind of environment? Why?

I'd start digging a new entrance and not connect it to any of the current rooms/tunnels until you have the capability to seal off that gaping hole. Just make a new fort for now. What you currently have sounds completely indefensible.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.
