so close to !!fun!!
« on: March 23, 2012, 10:54:43 pm »

despite my best efforts and looking at the newbie guides, I am still unable to harness magma, I've embarked at a volcano, and am roughly 10 z-levels below its top, I have no idea how to make the magma go to my channels without it flooding my furnace area. A little advice please?

The easiest way to harness a volcano is to make a room on the highest level that has magma, then channel the layer above to fill it.

You can do this underground by making the containment room, then making a smelter room and hallway to the magma above it. Build a magma-safe floodgate at the end of the hallway and link it to the lever, then open it and set the final tile to be channeled.
When the miner is off the floodgate, close it.

Note that magma does not pressurize like water, so you can build/dig your magma reservoir on any z-level and tap into the volcano without worrying about getting an upward flow. Thus it's safest to keep the red stuff below where your dwarfs live and work in case of an accidental leak, since it won't flow upstairs under any circumstances unless you're pumping it.

Well technically magma can still be pressurized if it passes through a screw pump like water is, it's just that magma will not come pressurized by falling.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I made my magma just making holes in the floor and blocking them with the impassible spots on the magma buildings.|
Then i set my 8 smelters to smelt all the ore on repeat = profit!!!
