If you don't fight them, however in the HFS are you going to get great at killing them?

I will find a way to drop a massive portion of the land above upon thier heads.

I'll keep them in place with masses of trained war kittens and fighting dogs should I ever fight them.

Send an exploratory force, backed up by miners. Miners are not bad in combat and in the second layer is a large amount of gems, often, and some webs for the cloth industry too.
Indeed, picks are awesomely badass.
Especially if the miners are legendary.
Watch out for poisonous things tough.

One handy way to explore caverns is to use Feline Cave Exploration Units. Put a couple of spare cats in the caverns (a pasture works fine) and seal them in (wall or locked door). Then make a meeting area (i-m) near the edge of the visible area. the cats will head to it, and reveal more or the cavern. Then remove the meeting area and make a new one. Continue until something kills all the cats. Or until you've explored all the caverns, I guess. Not that you're likely to do that with the first cats, but one can always hope.

If you don't use someone's pet, no one will be upset when your intrepid explorers meet their untimely end. Even their mommy will say "Kill all you want, I'll make more."

You can also substitute dogs, goats, chickens, or whatever animal you have an excess of. For me, if I have two or more cats of opposite polarity, I usually am looking for a good way to get rid of one or more of them. Any other animal is probably useful. Ok, cavys are pretty useless, too. And their name sounds good "Cavy Cave Exploration Units". But most cavy's I end up with are pets.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

Damn it! Why didn't I think of that? I've read of that method a dozen times over, and it didn't occur to me until you mentioned that. Although that doesn't seem as fun....

Downward passage is just a hole in one cavern layer to another. If you're lucky its only layer 2. If you're unlucky its layer 3 and now you're in for some fun
