I am a dabbling engraver
« on: March 17, 2012, 09:35:06 pm »

So I've been exploring dungeons and successfully not-dying for a little while now. I just resurfaced after almost dying from a mortal wound and I found that I've gained some skill in engraving (73/500). Has anyone else had this? It's hard to get information on non-starting skills for adventure mode from the wiki :(

I can tell you that I didn't engrave anything, but maybe while being thrown down a several z-level pit the floor ended up with a life-sized engraving of an adventurer? That's about all I can think of ;)

do you have any mods you are using? sometimes mods do strange things. one of my adventurers had around 60 in mining for no reason I could tell. I chalked it up to the mod I was using.

No mods.

Also, I've ruled out splatting on the ground at high velocity as the cause; my skill has gone up a little more. Maybe I'm engraving my enemies as I fight them? Y'know, Zorro-style.

What weapons are you using?  I almost imagine that you somehow picked up an iron chisel, and started gaining engraving skill from that.

Do you have any unusual interactions or equipment?

Nothing unusual as far as I can tell. I'm using the plain iron sword I started with, I'm wearing mostly bronze and some iron armor and a bronze shield. Occasionally I have been holding stuff in my hand because I forgot to drop/store it. But no chisel. I picked up a nickel silver ladle a while ago but it's been sitting in my inventory. No other tools.

I haven't been doing anything crazy, mostly just beating up baddies. I use the A menu mostly - and mostly weapon fighting with some wrestling too.

The only interactions I've been doing have been to fill up my waterskin at a well and once to remove an arrow.

I'm pretty new to adventurer mode but as far as I know I haven't been doing anything weird. I'll keep an eye on the skill level and see if I can figure it out. It's currently at dabbling (113/500).

put a copy of your save somewhere safe, might be bug report worthy

This is the slow method and there are probably better ways out there, but from what I understand, dwarf fortress has it's own game recorder. You could record the game while playing like you normally do. However, every so often (like every 5 minutes, or every half hour, or some other conviniout period of time) you check to see if your skill has improved. Once it does, you then just look at the recording between when you last checked the skills and when you first noticed the skill increase and then just take note of the things that you did (because of the frequent checks you won't have very much recording to look at). Then, just repeat each action you did during the time when your skill increased and then you should be able to figure out what is going on.
Or, if you give us a copy of the save (and at least some idea of what might be causing the skill increases), one of us might be willing to check for you.

No idea about engraving, but skill in mining as an adventurer would probably be due to having used a pick at some point.

I can verify that. I found a very good pick and as dwarf adventurer found that very dwarfy, so I started braining people with it. I'm now a competant miner.

Maybe it's something to do with slabs, because it takes skill in engraving to make them. It might relate to knowledge slabs in some way...

Like gaining skill in engraving when you use the slab to bash people's skulls in? My current adventurer would be a legendary engraver at this point.

When I was reorganizing my inventory to fit all by books on life and death into various bags and things, I looked at my inventory and saw that I was multigrasping a necromancer slab.  It was pretty hilarious.
I think that would be an excellent way to impart the critical lessons of life and death to the ignorant masses.

Maybe just looking at engraved images give you engraving skill?

I still think that the whole fortress should be flooded with magma the moment you try dividing by zero.
This could be a handy way of teaching preschool children mathematics.

I would suspect some strange, rare bug, like a special set of conditions that activate increase of certain skill, say mining, only due to a slight mistake in the code, they actually increase engraving. Such errors are common and easy to make.

The entire content consists of senseless murder, a pile of faceless naked women and zero regard for human life in general, all in the service of the protagonist's base impulses. It is clearly a cry for help from a neglected, self absorbed and disempowered juvenile badly in need of affectionate guidance. What a sad, sad display.
