Violate a mandate? You die?
« on: March 18, 2012, 09:40:57 pm »

Hey everyone!

I'm running up a decent fort, and I'm not sure if there is something wrong with my Captain of the guard. It's happened about 3-4 times now. Where he simply walks up to someone and kills them. And when I view the justice screen it's written "Person Harmed: "Mayor" (Failed a mandate) (This isn't verbatim but close enough).

Does someone get randomly executed should you not fufill the mayor's mandate? He killed my doctor I had since embark... .:( 10 years...

Yup dwarven justice is sooo great, its the communities responsibility to provide mandates for the mayor or all of motherland suffers. Think of it like the dragon not getting its sacrifice, so they all threw a party and drew straws or the sherrif has a special dice he rolls for this type of thing =P

Well, the person who failed it gets punished. If you have a nasty justice noble with military skills and a steel warhammer, yeah, somebody will get brained most of the time. So appoint no justice officials/make them weaklings with adamantite warhammers. Or magma the troublesome noble. Or, say, fulfill the mandate, if it isn't a pain.

But for killing a starting 7, I'd magma that bastard mayor. He's probably a vampire, anyways.

Do you have any cages or chains for jails?
Anyway, this is exactly why my Fortress Guard is always my marksdwarf squad and is always equipped with wooden crossbows only. If they ever do decide someone needs a walloping, they'll have a lesser chance of braining/spining someone.

You can set up some metal chains and designate them to be used for justice. Jails can end up being just as lethal, though, unless you take proper precautions by setting up a food stockpile in their cell or having several dwarves dedicated to giving food and water to prisoners.

A lack of cages and chains designated to be used for justice can AND will result in your dwarves getting beaten or hammered, no matter the crime.

Hi, you seem new here!  You may not be aware, but the community at large has a dislike of nobles.  Despite everything, there is actually a reason for this.  In fact there's a reason behind most of the forum's feelings.  Nobles are hated for their mandating ways and the justice that follows.  Elves are hated because they would formerly send diplomats to demand tree safety and refuse wooden items, which would turn into war.  Magma is magma, it's loved for intrinsic value.

Everything has a reason, and nobles are despised because they will make impossible mandates and then have your armorsmith killed.

Fulfilling the mandate gives the noble a happy thought.

Mandates are much easier now than they used to be, though.

Besides, cabinet-loving nickle-fans can be my count any time.  Most mandates are fairly easy and predictable.  You get plenty of warning when the goblet export ban mandaters roll into town.

Well, I don't hate nobles as such... It's just that sometimes, Urist CrazyMandate, Baroness consort needs to die for great justice the greater good of the fort.
Yeah, mandates are Serious Business™. Having designated jail cells tends to alleviate the legendary-armorsmith-killing problem somewhat, as does having a non-insane mayor (or baron or... well, you get it). As for a candy fluff Hammerer... well, it solves the problem with mandate violators, but creates another one when dealing with weredwarves, vampires or murderously insane dorfs that actually need some bashing in of skulls.

Certainly you could argue that DF is a lot like The Sims, only... you know... with more vomit and decapitation.
If you launch a wooden mine cart towards the ocean at a sufficient speed, you can have your entire dwarf sail away in an ark.

Thanks for confirming people!

I never really used sherif/captain of the guard in the past. But with the pesky Vampire I had close to embark I needed him to imprison the bastard. Which now rests in a forbidden cell... forever.

I'm a little angry at myself now, since I know that I got my best doctor killed for not having built 2 Knife Blades... But seriously, of all the people to kill... WHY MY DOCTOR!? lol

And the sick puppy of a captain guard, he goes and mirks them in their sleep most of the time... O_O And when I view his damn thoughts it says "Has enjoyed slaughtering lately"... Sick man!

So in retrospec, picking the old militia captain as captain of the guard was a bad idea. He's a little swift with his axe. :/

The fact that your sheriff has an axe isn't helpful either.  That's like exchanging a police cruiser with a tank and wondering why all the traffic is suddenly more flat.

I love my current nobles; I have a Queen who likes axes, a Duchess who likes millstones and a mayor who likes ballista parts.
And even better, I've realised that now I have royalty, if the dwarves decide to elect another, more awkward mayor, I simply replace him with MY choice. Cue Ballista Part Bob, custom profession name "Mayor".
Before the current mayor, one numpty demanded an Elk Bird Horn Door in his dining room. Idiot.
My Queen's biggest demand, which was easily met, was a lay pewter chest in her throne room.

Currently, I have a 30 strong military, all armed with rather nice steel axes.
Armok bless the Queen.
