Dorfs not building bridge
« on: March 17, 2012, 09:12:53 pm »

I ordered a small 3x5 chalk bridge to be built to cross over a river, and after one of my random architects brought all of the stone over, he immediately fell asleep. As soon as he did, I was spammed with a crapload of job cancellations that the Dorfs couldn't find the path to the bridge and that construction was suspended. Trying to unsuspended just trigger the cancellation spam, so I q -> x'ed the bridge and tried to set it up again, but now no one is moving stones over to build it. What do.

What side of the river did the architect fall asleep on?

Try building a floor path over where the bridge will be, so the dwarves can find their way to both sides of the bridge, then trying to build the bridge again, then deconstructing the floors when you're done. The stones should fall onto the bridge for retrieval.

I fixed the bridge problem... but now I have a hauling problem. I designated a wood stockpile next to my Carpenter shop so I could finally get started on some bed making, as most of my logs are quite a ways outside. My dorfs get ouside then I get spammed with Urist McIdiot cancels Store Item in Stockpile: Drop-off inaccessible. This doesn't make sense because nothing is blocking them. There is nothing preventing them from getting to where the logs are and getting to the stockpile. They just stopped as soon as they all got outside. The heck? My dorfs are broken.

Removing the stockpile inside does nothing. Half of my dorfs are idling outside, two are thirsty, and they're not budging.

Normally, in this case I'd suspect that you accidentally set them to a burrow at some point.

I don't use burrows. They don't make sense and never work for me, so I avoid them like the plague, so that's definitely not it.

Edit: Well, that was bizarre. Look at my northernmost bridge, next to the frozen waterfall, by my trade depot and stairs. See how there is a halfway constructed wall? I told a dorf to tear down the left-most completed portion of that wall, and one of the broken Dorfs outside ran to do it. After it was tore down, everyone outside suddenly zerg rushes in (across the ice no less) and into my fort to stave off dehydration/starvation.

But how? How could that one wall break their pathfinding so hard? They've had zero problem in the past following my tunnels, and I even tried setting the ice as a restricted traffic area and they still wouldn't budge. I kinda need those walls there though before the river thaws. I've already lost two cats and a lyemaker to the waterfall just above it going haywire.

Have you tried investigating the path with 'k' to see if there's anything there?

There's nothing blocking anything that I can see. Re-constructing that middle tile in the wall completely breaks my Dorf's path finding. Even now, the mason that rebuilt the wall is just standing right outside of it, not moving at all, even though there is a clear path to the fortress by walking across the ice and onto the other bridge.

In a situation like that, I generally try to build doors all along the passageway to see exactly where the path is lost.  I don't actually build the doors, mind you, I just see if there are any doors that can be built there.

Frequently, for me, this sort of problem is due to the growth of a tree in soil, or because I removed a construction 1 z-level underneath that was serving as a floor for the next level up.

I have discovered the issue. By loo(k)ing around, I noticed that my bridge was completely blocked in an ice wall due to the waterfall next to it flowing over it and freezing. I just couldn't see the ice due to the bridge graphic. I guess I will have to rebuild this bridge.

Judging from how big my waterfall is, how far away should I build my replacement bridge? I love the idea of bridge-waterfall-entrance, but I've lost a cheesemaker or something and my two embark cats to the waterfall flowing over the bridge, and I'm lucky I didn't lose someone else due to the freezing. Not to mention the freezing breaks path finding. I think if I build the top of the bridge immediately one tile down from where the wall is, I should be in good shape. Opinions?

Have you tried digging the ice wall out? You could put a cover over the bridge then, to keep the water out.

Seasonal freezing is going to be a problem for any bridge around a waterfall or directly over a river. If you're doing it for the mist, I'd make a mist generator indoors. If you're doing it for access across rivers, build a wall and ramp on either side of the river and go up a level to build the bridge. This is mostly general advice.

This. Just cover it up.
