I've embarked on some island with only my parent civilisation as neighbours in a calm biome. Should I get a defence system up and running or am I safe until I breach the caverns?

No neighbors means no sieges. On a calm biome, yeah, you should be utterly safe until you breach something.

Only problem is the aqifer, still a good spot though.

You won't get sieges, but I believe you will still get visits from Titans and other megabeasts once your population/wealth is high enough.

Incidentally, if you don't like sieges you can disable them entirely by editing d_init.txt and changing [INVADERS:YES] to [INVADERS:NO].
