Arrow wounds and other problems
« on: March 11, 2012, 04:04:41 pm »

So I hadn't played DF for awhile, saw the new release is out, and figured I'd knock around in adventure mode while the bugs in fort mode are getting ironed out. Got my first vampire necromancer, and I found myself full of arrows and with all my extremities in red. Thanks to undead fortitude I managed to kill the offending bowmen and crawl to safety. To make a long story short, I tried resting and fast-traveling but the wounds wouldn't heal past yellow, and eventually I pissed off the only human civilization and got killed in the wilderness because I couldn't walk or hold a sword. The questions are:
  • How long does it normally take red wounds to heal? Does being a vampire help or hinder?
  • Can vampires starve if they go long enough without feeding? Is there a reliable way to feed without getting caught?
  • When did the stinking kobolds start sending armies across the countryside? It was a pack of ~30 armed kobolds that finally got me.

1. It depends on how high your healing attributes are. Being a vampire gives you attribute boosts, so it technically should help in all cases except when you're a mountain of muscle and shields.
3. Kobolds man. If they don't stop you, who will save the world?

Q. How long does it normally take red wounds to heal? Does being a vampire help or hinder?
A. Wounds will never heal past yellow on the basic status screen.  That just means there are still scars.  Tendons, ligaments, and sensory nerves never heal.

Q. Can vampires starve if they go long enough without feeding? Is there a reliable way to feed without getting caught?
A. I have not tried it, but I have heard that in adventure mode they can starve to death.  Best way to feed without getting caught is to sneak.  Press 'e' and the option should be at the top when you are next to an unconscious victim. High ambusher skill might be needed.  You can also strangle random critters unconscious (wrestling) in the wild and feed off of them too.  Give that cute little fox a hug and 'kiss'.

Q. When did the stinking kobolds start sending armies across the countryside? It was a pack of ~30 armed kobolds that finally got me.
A. It all depends on the size of their group and how close you are to where they are staying.  I found a bandit camp led by a Necromancer and he had around 40+ living followers.  Its at times like this that I'm glad I work up ambushing early.

the best way for vampires to feed is to grab a bandit and strangle them till thay passout.

Also, fast-traveling heals wounds easily.
Usually enough to stop bleeding,  but watch out for the deadly shallow infected scar that doesnt hinder you in any way and that you thus dont notice until it is too late.

Incidentally, if any arrows are embedded in your body, you need to remove them for the wounds to fully heal (IIRC).

So then wounds heal differently in Adventure Mode than Fortress Mode, is that it?

Define "different."

The timescale is totally different for one. For two, there's no medical treatment at all in adventure mode, so things that wouldn't be the death of a dwarf in Fortress mode with a doctor will ruin your adventurer.

On the other hand, adventurer NPCs and PCs can seem to survive much more horrific wounds for "longer." In general, to me, Fortress mode seems to play out the more realistically of the two...but that's probably because time is compressed and you're not seeing the several rounds of combat hacking away at a doomed enemy like you do in adventure mode.

adventurer mode runs in shorter time spans, seconds and minutes fort mode is longer but more vage.

I think red injuries don't heal up in Adventure Mode, unlike Fortress Mode, which takes a lot of time, depending on the location of the wound.

red injuries do heal sometimes in adv mode, they take just as long as fortress mode though. which is an issue due to a day being quite a long time in adv mode, but a few seconds in fortress mode.

Wounds probably don't heal with time, it just heals to the max by fast travelling at least once. I don't think it can heal more than that afterwards, it's the question I always ask myself.

Does anyone know if it heals more than that after the fast travelling insta-heal?

From all that I've seen wounds will heal once after fast travel or sleep, and after that no healing occurs. That being said all wounds will heal to at least yellow, and assuming you can fast travel in time even two punctured lungs and a diced heart will heal. Healing attributes affect nothing in Adv mode as far as I know.

'Deep' wounds (Severed limbs, nerves, or motor nerves) tend not to heal on their own. That said, if you happen to be afflicted by a curse that causes you to change forms in the full moon, your wounds will be completely healed. This even includes missing limbs. Being a vampire keeps you from being a werebeast, however.

Also, zombies count as companions when calculating ambush sizes. The larger your army, the larger any ambushing group will be. It may also be you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Fate moves in mysterious ways, huh?

I do want to add once more: You can suck blood from regular unconcious beings. Breaking bones untill a creature passes out, or choking it, will work fine. It's also just fun to shatter all the bones you can find, starting at the toes. Most creatures pass out before you have finished the legs though.
