To keep them happy, just make sure your fort is deep in the ground (so everything is stone), then have one stone carver smooth EVERYTHING. that makes him legendary, then you order it engraved and he makes shittons of masterwork engraving, getting you legendary dining room and royal 3x3 bedrooms.
Quite usefull information, thanks. My current fortress has the living quarters for my now 122 dwarfs in clay...well, perhaps move them down. Conserning moving living-quarters: is it possible to remove a placed bed for example (or coffer/cabinet) without destroying it (as in moving it instead of destroying it)?

You sure can.  q, then put the cursor over the bed, and hit x, IIRC.  Dwarves with furniture hauling on will remove it and set it off the the side, and you can put the furniture item elsewhere.  You can do this to tables and chairs, too.  It might take them a bit to get to it, mind. :)

Also of note: If you make an init change, restart DF (not just save, but save and quit and restart).  init stands for initialization, DF will only read that file when it's initializing the program.

Btw, tried to make a evil-trap-leve-thingy but since I can't forge yet I'll have to stick with other ideas... My fortress only have masons and carpentry for making things... Seems like a huge-project to actually begin with forging...weapons etc. For example my hammerer was about to punish a little naughty dwarf but had to cancel since he had no weapon  :(

You can build that device with just a mechanic's shop and a carpenter's shop. The mechanic makes stone mechanisms, which are used for the lever and to link the lever to the spikes. You can use wooden spikes, since the migrants won't have armor. No metalcraft needed.

Ye know, being an usurper overseer gone mad with power isn't too bad. It's honestly not that different from being a normal overseer.

Program.

And I was, while being florid, still totes srs about the learning curve.  DF is not exactly intuitive.

A Let's Play/tutorial/lazy newb mod would not be a bad idea, if you don't have a veteran player whose brain you can consume who you can consult for help.

(ETA: *eyerolls at BBS bracketcode*)

F'rex:  A floodgate is [ f ] in the mechanics command menu when you're connecting it to a lever, [ x ] when being built/placed on the map, and [ l ] when you make one via the task menu in a workshop.
