A good magma scouring.
« on: March 14, 2012, 08:12:43 pm »

I'm thinking of installing an elaborate plumbing system that will let me selectively "magma scour" sections of my fort in a controlled manner (famous last words, I know), cleaning it of nonsense like worn-out, abandoned clothing. Plus, it leaves a pleasant "bowels of the earth" smell.

Will magma also remove contaminants like FB splatters?

Tangentially related: Boots assigned as armor will protect feet from FB splatters just as well as clothing shoes, correct?

I'm considering a similar selective-magma-flooding arrangement for security purposes. From memory, magma should clean the floors, but not the walls of blood splatters.

There's safe. Then there's unsafe. And then there's the average dwarf fort, which remains unrated because the OSHA inspector flatly refused to go anywhere within a dozen miles of the place.

Sounds like an excellent security system. At least one of the floors of your fort has to be a piping level for the magma distribution network. I suggest pumping all the magma to a tank higher up, and then pouring it down into rooms. Allow for magma drainage, or only pour amounts that will disappear on their own.

My main concern here is how you handle your lockouts and your flow, particularly if you expect any amount of intruders to which you'll be bathing.  Having magma flow from above is easy, and drain through the floor is convenient, but you need to plan for trolls.  Hiding your drainage behind fortifications can allow safety and prevent building destroyer (as well as tantrums).  Bridges can be utilized as well, but more awkwardly due to the way they can be destroyed while down.  Hatches and grates are nice, but can be smashed.

If you're feeling very creative, I'd suggest a method to cast whole hallways into obsidian, I can think of a few methods to achieve this actually.

Of course if you're just wanting a cleaning method, that's considerably easier.
