Can't find my target

I was sent to kill a night troll or something. It was not in a lair. I went to the spot marked on the map but when I got there there was no troll (I looked almost 50 layers down using dfhack's reveal but there weren't any caves). I've looked there both by day and night. Any idea on how to find this stupid troll or get a different quest (they won't give me another one until I complete this one). Thanks

You'll notice a directional indicator on the upper left side of the screen that will say something like TSK-NNE. This means you have a task to the north by northeast.

Follow that, and look for a down ramp...

I did... eventually it just said *** (it literally said ***, that isn't an auto-censor thing)

Creatures wander the wilds also.  Walk around and see if you can get it to pop.

That happened to me as well; the service was to kill an Elf near in a Lair, but before getting inside , I got the "Prepare to Die!" Message. While looking for him, it took me a whole 20~30 minutes to find out that he kept running away from me outside the screen. Despite my speed of 1100, The elf outran me so I decided to give up on that quest until my adventurer became a bit stronger/faster.

I'm having the same trouble- I'm sent on quests to find individual dwarf vampires in the middle of nowhere (typically mountains) and there's not a trace of them in the TSK location. Really frustrating because my quest list is full of them (and unreachable sewer serpents and gangs of necromancers).

I'm familiar with identifying Vampires- in towns it's pretty easy. I'm also familiar with finding beasts in the wild- those hard to find caves. But finding these roaming individuals seems to be impossible...
