Personally, I'm interested in the borg logic possibilities for vampires.  I'm working on a vampire-based delay, and think that it will require 4 vampires to operate in perpetuity as a high resolution clock.

So make some machinery based on the ultra-cool new borg logic units.

Wow, I didn't realize this thread was so popular.
I've noticed a few interesting things about my vampires.
 - They don't get bad thoughts from being deprived of food/booze
 - As long as I don't let them out of their room, they won't be punished for the deaths I've attributed to them
 - They get good thoughts from having their punishments delayed
 - They've begun to make social relationships with each other

All of these factors combined mean that they'll likely never become sad/enraged, and insanity is unlikely, barring strange moods (can vampires get strange moods?).

I can't really move them from their room, at least not without losing a few dwarves in the interim.  The last time I tried, I lost more than three dwarves when the vampires scattered to feed.  I could set up a drop-trap, though the location of the room will make it a bit of a hassle (it's on the top level of my fort, just barely below ground; I'd have to set up a safe zone on the surface in order to be able to drop things in).

I'm not likely to get any more vampires, as I've hit my population cap.  It's possible that I may have another vampire (possibly more than one), but not likely.  I can't be entirely sure, especially in all the confusion my last attempt to move the vampires caused.  Deaths are still turning up, and while I'm pretty sure they were all caused by the known vampires, I can't be sure.  I have noticed that the population count in the z-status screen will display an accurate count even before a death is discovered, which is interesting.  That count has been stable for a while, which leads me to believe there aren't any loose vampires.
Yes, I know I could look through all my dwarves' descriptions to know for certain which are vampires, but that's not something I want to do for 205 dwarves.

If you're having trouble moving vampires, just do what zookeepers do when moving dangerous animals. Have two enclosures for the creature in question, with a pathway in between them. Make sure the pathway is completely sealed off from the outside world, then open the doors to both enclosures, and coax the critter into the other enclosure. Once they're in, seal the door to that enclosure, and you can now access their old enclosure.

It works for lions, and I've seen it work for vampires, too.

How does one 'coax' a vampire? Drop in a sleeping dwarf?

I used furniture hauling to move my vampires, but I think someone earlier in this thread mentioned military squads. That's probably more effective, anyway.

I have considered using a sealed off path to move the vamps, and that's likely what I'll do if I need to move them again.  For now, they're fine where they are.

I have them in a special military squad, which allows me to station them where I want them.

Why not just make the entire fort full of vampires?

You could do away entirely with farming, cooking, and brewing as well as all hauling tasks related to the food industry. That would save an enormous amount of labor.

Also since they never sleep, never need to eat or drink, they will be far more productive than a non-vampire.

Do vampires reproduce? And if so, are the children also automatically vampires? Make them all vampires. Vampire fortress. Woe be to any migrants to stumble through your gates.  :D

Sorry, but vampires cannot reproduce.  They all have the [STERILE] tag.

I use vampires as  migrant disposal units.

Whenever a migration comes i pick maybe 1 or 2 of the more useful dwarfs out of the pack of 50, then i draft all the others and send them into that part of the fort which shall not be uttered.

I have a chute to pass down rancid plump helmet wine andfood but they all eventually fall asleep

You could drop one a z level or two into your well. Drinking vampire blood spreads the curse, or so I've heard.
