breaching an aquifer without losing dorfs
« on: March 10, 2012, 12:06:51 pm »

I've been through the wiki, then I tried the cave in method, only problem : my miner gets blasted by the dust and often fall in the hole, what can I do to prevent this?

Using pumps is the safest way to go, but it takes a lot of effort and a river or brook to make it workable.

Try this method :

With the extra wall, your dwarf should be at safe distance when the cave-in happens.

Or you can remove aquifers from the world generation if they annoy you too much, but you'll lose the benefits of them too.

Erm no?
You don't need a river or brook to breach an aquifer with pumps. These absolutely have nothing to do with one another.

He meant as a place to dump the water you pump out, I think.  Myself, I pump it back into the aquifer, just off to the side of where I'm trying to peirce. ;)

Only problem I've had is the last two times i've gotten aquifer's, its been in soil layers, so I had to dig out more and build walls instead of just smoothing them.

Just make sure it's just one z-layer deep. I used the "build walls" alternative since I hadsoil there, but then I noticed how there was a metric f-ton of aquifer layers. There was a whole aquifer cavern.

If you use the cave in method just bring a few stones on embark and make mechanism and support for remote collapse.
