Tile-painting programs?
« on: March 10, 2012, 12:27:04 pm »

Are there any programs that can be used to paint tile-based maps? Of course there are tilemap-programs used in game making, but I think that you cannot save file made by one of these in image format (I tried to use on in this way) Of course I could take a screenshot from the tilemap what I'm making. I'd like to draw DF style maps for own fantasy worlds etc.

Any image editing software is good. Paint is nice if the tilemaps don't need transparency. GIMP is free and has many beneficial qualities to painting tilemaps if you're willing to learn.

Okay, I don't know about how easily use those, making large maps with methods that I know are very painful (copy tile, paste tile, asseble it...)

GIMP does have one handy feature that eases the pain of repeating tiles: the pattern tool.

I'm a bit confused though: when you say tilemap, do you mean a full map of repeating tiles, making the tiles themselves or both?

Actually, if you already have the tiles and just want to make a tilemap and export as an image, there's Ogmo Editor.

It also exports as XML so you can use it in a game.

http://www.mapeditor.org/

I love this program, it allows for you to place tile images, even isometric if you want, and  it can also export it in a few different ways if you want to take up programming. I think you can export images, too.
