Using animal traps for vermin food supply
« on: March 22, 2008, 04:57:00 pm »

Has anyone had much luck with the Trapper skill and animal traps? I've set them down in my heavy-vermin areas, like food stockpiles, and they're never triggered. I'd like to be able to use rats as a regular food source (mm, hole food) but I'm not sure if the traps don't work that well, or if I'm doing something wrong.

So, you expect dwarves to walk down the road to get groceries at Hole Foods, booze at Trader Urist's, and warm clothing at The North Chasm?

...no, I do expect people to either answer the question of a thread or not clutter it up with snarky comments, but thanks.

Anyone else? With, you know, gameplay experience with this issue?

The best way to capture vermin, I've found, is to use the "capture live land animal" command at the butcher's shop. The odds are pretty good they'll catch something on their first try or so. Of course, if you want a steady raw vermin food supply then you will need plenty of trappers to do the job.

Okay, I'll try the job instead of just setting down traps, thanks.

yeah do the job. it works in the kennels too. My dwarves eat quite a lot of rats and lizards, for some reason. Some of em like it more then lavish meals of various types.

Man, I don't know if the cat was just taking everything ahead of time, or what. First attempt of this - for a Proficient-skilled trapper - was one chipmunk after 6 weeks. -.- Poor dwarf just kept wandering around with the cage, sometimes he seemed like he was going to chase something, then.. red ? flash like he lost it. =p

I'll have to try again with a couple more trappers and no cats around, see if the yield is any better.

If you want to use vermin as a food supply, you might want to cage the kitties first.

Or eat them.  Whichever.
