Floodgate questions
« on: October 18, 2006, 12:47:00 pm »

The wiki seems to be a little self-contradictory on this point:

First, it says "An open floodgate disappears from the map entirely, and the tile functions as a blank space."

Second, it says "For most practical purposes, a floodgate is a wall on top of a channel."

One "practical purpose" that's very, very different about blank spaces and walls is that dwarves can walk through one, but not the other.  Can a dwarf walk through an open floodgate? Assuming no liquid in the channel, of course.

Another difference is that walls prevent cave ins, and blank spaces do not.  Does a floodgate do so? Does it matter whether it's open or closed?

I'm mostly interested in the "walk through" question, rather than the "prevent cave ins" question.  But they seem related, so I figured I'd mention the "prevent cave ins" one too.

Thanks in advance.

Any unfilled channel can be walked over.  This includes open floodgates.  So a floodgate -can- be used as an airlock.

Floodgates probably don't stop cave-ins.  As far as I know, the only building that can stop a cave-in is a support.

um... from most common usages... floodgates are flanked by 2 wall tiles... so it makes no difference whether floodgate act as support or not... in those cases..

when open, you can walk through it... that is.. if it hasn't got water running through it. i suppose you can still walk through the water, if you are wading (drowning) through the water to start off with.

when closed.. you can't walk through it (thus like a wall bit)

If it prevented cave ins, it could be used as an impassable support.  Such a thing would be useful.

Anyway, thanks to you both for the answers!

Floodgates when opened can be travelled, water or otherwise.  I had a wonderful frog demon destroy one, flooding an area that I had considered secure, and swim right on through to cause much mayhem.  Was unpleasant...2 casulties.  When destroyed they leave a channel (when opened/lowered they do too I believe).

Someone said that statues work, too.  I don't know for sure, though.
