Making my firs pump stack! Tips?
« on: March 08, 2012, 05:51:40 pm »

title says most of it.

I plan to make my first pump stack! It will go 100 stories, from the caverns, to the fortress. I would like to know what precautions to take if I want to make it so the same pump stack can pump both water and magma, as well as any other tips you may have so I don't have too much Fun. :P

What I think we're saying is we need dwarves to riot and break things more often.

Just make it so that it can handle magma and it will handle water just fine. Just make sure all of the pump components, floodgates, mechanisms, etc. are made from magma safe materials.

You should probably also follow teh disign from NecroRebel's Better Magma Pumpstack thread to reduce the negative effects on your FPS.

The problem I see is that when you switch from one to the other, you'll have to wait until all of the little 1/7 puddles of water/magma evaporate, or you'll end up with obsidian blockages.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

You also need a way to evacuate the system of whatever happens to be in it.  For magma I suggest a hatch at the top reservoir with a simple pipe directly to the magma sea, and a separate hatch nearby for the water.  If you open the hatch and close the source while leaving the pumps running it should empty out pretty quickly.  It's a big project though, especially if you don't have good access to iron.

Don't use wood, it'll burn up.
