My entire fortress is sleeping in my bedless barrack despite the fact it's right next to an apartment suite, complete with beds, then they start complaining about sleeping on the floor. How can I fix this?

You might have to make the beds into bedrooms.  Q over them and hit R.

I do. I have each apartment set as a bedroom.

Have you assigned those rooms for your dwarwes?

You don't have to assign the beds to them, they'll pick them up on their own.

So, you've got each bed set up as a bedroom, you've got non-military dwarves, and they're all sleeping in the barrack.  Humor me and press "r" to check the rooms list, and make sure that you've got a list of bedrooms in there somewhere.

I think they prefer barracks over unassigned rooms. You can either assign all bedrooms to dwarves, or make another barracks with beds inside. This leads to the problem of soldiers sparring in there, though. It's usually best if you seperate the sleeping barracks, and the military level, so that soldiers never even have to get near the sleeping barracks. I usually build a training barracks with adjacent rooms for all soldiers near the entrance, and a sleeping barracks many z-levels down for the civilian dwarves.

It depends which are nicer.  A dwarf will rather sleep in a big nicely detailed public barracks than a tiny ugly private room.

Just don't put any beds in the barracks, keep it for training only.

Since when?  I've never seen this.

If the economy is on, then the dwarves might not be able to afford a room.

Nope, my dwarves will pick a free bedroom over the barracks every time if they can afford it.

Alright, this is starting to get frustrating.   :mad:

Even my dwarves with assigned rooms choose to sleep in the barracks (which I lowered down two levels) then in their respective, nicely designed rooms. They'll then wake up and bitch about their "poor living conditions."    :mad:   :mad:   :mad:   :mad:   :mad:   :mad:   :mad:

Are these military dwarves?  You can set those in the military->squad screen to sleep in barracks/rooms/on the ground.

Also, you're entirely certain they can all get to the rooms?  You didn't lock a door in between or something?

Yep. Once I disable the "set room as barracks/armory" option they all flood to the upper level and rush to their rooms.

I had my military dwarves set to "sleep in rooms" so I reset it to "sleep in barrack" but it did not make a lickin' difference.
