breeding mules
« on: October 17, 2006, 02:45:00 am »

ok, i know mules aren't much use besides meat, but more mules would mean more meat that first winter.  unfortunately i have yet to see a mule produce a little mule.  are they sterile?  or just too stubborn/stupid to figure out the birds and the bees?

With extremely rare exceptions, real-life mules are sterile.

In fact the term mule itself has become synonymous with the concept of sterility  ;)

If I recall it's a crossbreeding of horse and donkey and these two animals are different enough that the result is sterile but just barely similar enough to actually produce offspring at all.

I'm hoping that donkeys get implemented sometime; more mules would be nice. (I guess adding crossbreeding could also allow for things like Half-Elves, although I get the feeling that Humans and Elves in DF are slightly less compatible than in D&D.)
