Pond Grabber infestation
« on: May 01, 2013, 05:24:36 am »

One of my cave layers is flooded, and the edge of the map spawns nothing but pond grabbers. Sending my military to dispatch them results in the Grabbers losing some tentacles and slinking off deeper into the cave until they decide to leave and let different pond grabbers immediately respawn. Thanks to having pond grabbers constantly on the map, no interesting cave creatures tend to spawn. It's nice that the only dangerous cave creatures are on my flooded cave layers, but I'd quite like to get myself a GCS or something breedable of interest.

My military isn't a viable way of getting rid of pond grabbers. I can't block off the cave (except perhaps by natural rock cave-ins) to isolate the pond grabbers. I also assume that I can't drain the water as it will simply flow in from the edge of the map again (indefinitely?). Any good ways to deal with this slimy vermin?

Blocking them off might prevent other creatures spawning in. Just keep killing them and they'll go extinct, or be patient. I have the same situation in my current fort where most of the cavern is water.

If your cavern ceiling allows, your best (and safe) option is carve some fortifications in the natural rock - preferably somewhere high, overlooking the pool. Marksdwarves will make short work of them. You can just cut out overlooks if your marksdwarves are all boss-eyed.

If above the watery map edges there is some "empty space" map edge, construct some floors there. It may allow terrestial creatures to spawn. Bonus point for creating a single point of entry with airlocks so you can cage trap the hell out of them and retrieve the caged beasts in safety.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.
