Pumping out a glacial aquifer?
« on: March 01, 2012, 12:21:04 pm »

I'm attempting to pump my way through an aquifer just beneath a glacier.  Problem is, once the water is pumped, it immediately freezes on level with the pump.  I suppose I could try building a plug and knocking through the aquifer that way, but the clock is ticking and supplies are running low.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Freeze the aquifer. Open it to the outside air. Then dig through its frozen carcass.

Yeah, just that.

After losing a miner to the ice I'm amazed at how much I still have to learn about Dwarven pathing.

Also..  I'm still not able to channel through, even though it's exposed to sunlight.  I made a 7x7 hole all the way to the surface, but the aquifer level fills and freezes and fills again.  I think I'll just drop a plug.

Dwarf pathing = Series of interconnected tubes, that somebody decided to set on fire.

Screen shots? As long as you leave the outer ice walls alone this shouldn't happen

build a really tall pumpstack and direct all the falling water to the map edges so you can completely block migrants from entry using ice walls

You need to leave a ring of ice at each level around the outside, so it's not in contact with aquifer rock.

Thanks.  I actually just abandoned and embarked on a terrifying glacier with no aquifer.  Those are more Fun.  Eventually I'll go back and try to figure out what went wrong with channeling from the surface.

DON'T channel it, dig down stairs on top and then up/down stairs in the aquifer layer, let that fill with water so dwarves don't path through it and THEN channel it out, starting at the center and moving outwards.  The dwarves will not attempt to path through the 7/7 water and stuff below stairs is considered inside and thus won't instantly freeze.

Just throw them off a bridge.

Make sure the "survivors" have a way back up.

Also, yes, do not butcher things in a terrifying biome.  Pit anything that you HAVE to kill into magma.  Anything that can get outside and get killed is a liability.  Grazers are a severe liability due to their tendency to starve to death combined with their vulnerability when outside grazing.  Isolate them ASAP by putting them in a room that is sealed with a wall and then can be later flooded with magma.

Your fortress needs to be sealed so flying creatures cannot enter it either.

Oh yeah.  We're locked down.  I'm battling leftover hair though.  Good experience for the boys.
