Platinum buckler?
« on: May 17, 2008, 06:46:00 am »

Whee, my first topic.  :D

Anyway - a dwarf made a platinum buckler while in a strange mood. As far as I know, bucklers can't normally be made from platinum, so I was wondering how how strong the armor is compared to bucklers made from other materials. Does anyone know, or is there any way I can find out?

its going to be 50% for material (same as wood, leather, ect), and then get the quality modifier. just be happy he made something useful, instead of another earring or ring.

you probably wont see it used unless you have a champion set to buckler.

It's 50% for being an "other" material, and apparently 120x (I read that somewhere here) for being an artifact.

It'll be sixty times as good as a standard iron shield, or maybe only six times as good? Excellent item, anyway    :)

You could try setting dwarves on buckler first, then turn on shields when they have bucklers. (I had one dwarf running around with both a buckler and shield in my last game ... no idea how that happened though.)

Also these are interesting ...

it will be worth 120x as much as another shield of the same materials. The artifact damage\defense modifiers are currently unknown, but the best guesses place it around 5x. unfortunately this means it's only 2.5x more than standard iron. for reference, masterwork steel is 2.66x the effect of standard iron, while masterwork iron is a straight double effect.

It's not a bad piece of gear by any means, but it's not the awe-inspiring devastation that is an adamant artifact.

no-one knows the modifier for artifacts for sure, 5x is one number floating around but there is no real good way to test it for sure.

Keep in mind, however, that shields are a little different then other armors. They do lower damage taken like other armor, however the biggest advantage is blocking (which stops all damage from that hit) and I think the shield's quality modifier affects that - seeing as artifact is the max quality then your artifact shield is more powerful then it would seem and probably better then any other shield (other then maybe a masterwork/artifact adamantine one).

It will also be incredibly heavy, right?

Well, it weighs 321Γ - I have no idea if that is light or heavy...

And now another dwarf in a strange mood made a platinum goblet - they sure like their platinum artifacts...
