Finding undeground river
« on: March 19, 2008, 05:12:00 am »

Hello!

I've been playing DF for some time now and I really love it) But one question keep  bothering me.

I've started on the land with undeground river (at least regional prospector says so), but unfortunately I cannot find it on the map ( I digged several 1 tile tunnels to the edge of the map, but no river ((

I don't want to use reveal, but I really want to find the river and build fortress around it. How can I do this? Are there any good way to know at least on which level the river is?

Thank you)

Uhh...

Underground rivers are usually around 6-12 tiles wide and 1 tile high (I think). Your best bet is to estimate the area of the river based on the prospector location (i.e: the area of the tile where prospector showed there was the underground river) and just dig everywhere there. Up, down, left, right, until you get a damp stone message.

There's an exploit that may allow you to find it.  Go to stocks, check the list of bones (at the bottom), hit Tab to switch to individual items, and then look for weird stuff like frogman bones or cave crocodile bones.  If you see anything like that, zoom to it and then dig to that location to uncover the river.

Indeed, that is how I found my Pit in one of my Waterfall Fortresses

I wouldn't call it an exploit... it's an indication just like in real life. If you are looking for water in real life, you preferably watch out for things existing close to a water source. Same here...

Yes, just like in real life, where you see through stone.

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.

What he said.

I mean, obsidian's logically stone, right? If it's thin enough, you can see through it.

The power of a dwarven office. They tell the paper to write, and it writes. The paper knows. The paper sees.

Dig down to the deepest level, and carve passages 7 tiles long. 5x5 tiles will be left in the middle of a square of these passages, like this:
code:
.............
.#####.#####.
.#####.#####.
.#####.#####.
.#####.#####.
.#####.#####.
.............

Because all cave rivers drain into a chasm that will fit into a 5x5 area, that means that you're certain to find them if they exist. The same goes for magma pipes and long/small chasms, since they 'fall out the bottom' of the map.
Generally, you'll want to do this pattern in any case, to make sure you can quickly and easilly find ALL the veins of ore in the map at that level.

Or more simply, just use regional prospector to see the features locations on the map before you embark.
