Is this stairs thing a bug?
« on: February 27, 2012, 11:52:25 pm »

Fliers can apparently move through an up/down staircase directly to an open square one z level down and one square to the side, even when there is a wall in the space directly below the up/down staircase.

example of a thing a flier can move through:
X = up/down stairs
# = wall
+ = floor

z = 0:

Z = -1:

Makes sense to me. It's just diagonal movement: move right one tile, move up one tile.

Makes sense to me. It's just diagonal movement: move right one tile, move up one tile.

But the thing is nothing else can do this - not even liquids.

The liquids must move down and then to the side to achieve the same effect.

However, I would ask the OP to confirm beyond any doubt that the creature is not moving down before it moves to the side.

Solution:  Put cage traps around all your stairwells and hope it isn't [TRAPAVOID].

Isn't it possible to move diagonally upward in adventure mode using shift and ctrl?

It is possible.  Before .34.01 you'd need to move diagonally upwards to climb out of a river/pool.  Not sure if you could do this on dry ground, never had a good chance or reason to try.

I noticed this too:

Makes sense you should be able to move upwards diagonally if you can do it in the xy-plane, so probably a new feature rather than bug.

IIRC fliers have always been able to move through diagonal edges of cubes into a space adjacent by only one edge, but I could be wrong. They don't seem to do it often, so perhaps there are some odd restrictions, but I do recall them doing it back before 34.01.

That is correct. The horizontal and vertical squared were filled with walls, so it had to move diagonally.

This effect has caused my only archer tower to be acessable to giant flying zombies via my air moat :(

I know that building x/y/z up/down staircases in a cube will let grounded creatures path in three dimensions, like fliers.

Up/down stairs work kind of funny when used as a base or the top of a stairway. Try to use up or down stairs when possible.
