Of Dwarves, Waterfalls, and Swimming !!fun!!
« on: February 26, 2012, 04:11:37 pm »

I just thought I would share with those of you that hadn't encountered it yet ... with the addition of ramps along the edges of ponds and rivers in 0.34, dwarves will think they are able to cross a stream at the top of a waterfall because the ramp allows access and the water depth drops to between 2 and 4.

They are wrong!

What ends up happening is they path through teh water at the top of the falls, walk down the ramp, and get washed over the falls by the water of the stream.  In my case, they then fall 11 z-levels to a watery grave due to drowning while unconscious from the various multiple broken limbs.

Oh, and if there is a tree right next to a north flowing stream, and said tree is on the east side of the stream, the idiot wood cutter will stand in the water to try and cut it, and get washed over that same 11 z-level water fall.

The cat managed to survive, but had three out of four of her legs broken.  The entire second migrant wave plummeted to its death, with all but the last being noted as dead right away. The last was "missing", because nobody else saw him drown.

Using restricted zones didn't seem to help, though I had other issues with that fortress, so I don't know if the high-traffic marked bridge would have helped or not since I abandoned.

My my, I wonder how Toady will fix this without some kind of environment-sensitive pathing logic that will require a dedicated supercomputer to run.

On the other hand it should make a pretty amusing fortress defense, if you can keep the waterfall spirit from eating your dwarves. Drying the area below the waterfall with pumps and putting a refuse stockpile and butcher's shop there would make it easy to harvest the bones.

Yeah, this has cropped up a lot. Has anybody tried building a "ledge" of floorgrates at the same level as the source riverbed? In theory the water would push the creature onto a grate, before draining away safely. Might work.

Maybe a workaround could be to work with a bridge and traffic designations (i.e. mark all river tiles as area with the highest amount of movement points needed per tile and mark the bridge as fastest way, i.e. with the lowest amolunt of MP needed per tile).

Ideally in this case one would assume that your dwarves in most of the cases prefer the bridge (at lest if it is near enough) in contrast to wading through the river

Or if you're just trying to contain the problem as opposed to using it for defense, you could dig a tunnel under the problematic area of the waterfall, then wall over the ramps in that area. That way dwarves would have no access to the shallow water and would have a way around it. Rather easier than building a bridge.

I hadn't seen those threads, and you are probably right ... there are probably a bunch more of them.

I'll have to try the grate "path" across the end of the water fall.  My new fortress falls are only 3 z-levels, so it isn't as bad. I'm already planning an emergency rescue platform at the bottom. ;)

I'm not really seeing a problem here.   :D
