I personally think the idea of golden windows is awesome.  But that's just me.

If you don't mind the glass turning pink, then you can easily have gold "tinted" glass windows IRL.  You just heat the window glass in the annealing oven past the heat fracture temp, whip out a propane torch, and a bit of gold wire.

Blast the gold wire with the torch so that the flame "kisses" the glass. The gold woll vaporize, and then "stick" to the hot but not quite molten window glass.  A light application turns the glass a nice rosy pink. Prolonged application deposits a golden metallic sheen, and a deep red color.

(Dreams of a far more advanced DF glass industry...)

If making rock windows/gems is a feature then hopefully Toady will add a way to engrave a window to walls after you smooth/build them in the future. I mean if you can get a jewel crafter to smooth down a boulder why not just designate it from a wall like you would an engraving?
