The chasm plague!

What exactly is the chasm plague?
I know the flying beasties might collide and fall down but sometimes there is just a dead naked mole dog lying around. This is quite annoying as the chasm is empty after 1-2 years.

Chasm critters tend to kill each other.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

In addition, many of the chasm creatures have quite short lifespans, so it is possible for them to die off from old age before you reach them. In an unmodded game most chasm creatures are not set up to reproduce either, so you only have the initial supply of creatures.

that seems strange, as i have never seen torn off limbs near dead beasts. have you ever seen them fight?

old age seems like a perfectly clear explanation though, although those are the only creatures that do so. cave lake/river creatures always fall down the end of the river, or start in frozen water

They don't attack each other, it just looks like that from time to time.  They're all just dying from old age, since their maximum lifespan is anywhere from three to four years and they start out at a random age when you settle the area.  And, like Metalax said, quite a few of them don't breed.  All of the critterman types are sterile, and most of the others don't have enough time to pop out a litter before they die of old age.
